The derivation of water quality criteria (WQC) for antibiotics is influenced by the inclusion various organisms' toxicity data, including microbial though no definitive conclusions have been reached. This study focuses on sulfonamide antibiotics, common in Yangtze River Delta (YRD), to assess influences different data determining WQCs and subsequent evaluation ecological risks. A total 263 points from eight sulfonamides, sulfamethoxazole (SMX) sulfamethazine (SM2), were selected derive using Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD) methods. Three WQC types calculated: based native species (WQC-n), a combination non-native (WQC-nn), microorganisms (WQC-nnm). While WQC-nn showed minimal differences WQC-n, resulted more conservative short-term (SWQC-nnm), calculated as 256.90 μg/L SMX 196.09 SM2, approximately half SWQC-nn values (435.20 491.11 SM2). Monitoring past 15 years YRD revealed 133 % increase risks when LWQC-nnm compared LWQC-n LWQC-nn, particularly under worst-case pollution scenarios. However, there was slight temporal decline overall concludes that incorporating results protective underscores need further research develop safeguard sensitive organisms better reflect real-world exposure scenarios, e.g., mixture exposure.
