Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) of infectious disease agents is increasingly seen as a reliable source population health data. To date, wastewater-based efforts have largely focused on individual pathogens. However, given that wastewater contains broad range pathogens circulating in the population, more comprehensive approach could enhance its usability. We simultaneous detection SARS-CoV-2, sapovirus, Campylobacter jejuni, coli, Salmonella spp., pathogenic Escherichia Cryptosporidium Giardia spp. and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) clinical relevance. achieve this goal, biomass concentration nucleic acid extraction methods were optimized, samples analyzed by using set (RT)-qPCR (HT)-qPCR methods. determined prevalence spatial temporal trends targeted collected novel information ARGs Finnish wastewater. In addition, use different concentrates, namely ultrafiltered concentrate supernatant centrifuged pellet, effect freezing thawing prior to sample processing investigated with indicator microbe crAssphage. Freeze-thawing decreased gene copy count crAssphage comparison analyzing fresh (p < 0.001). Campylobacters most abundant two four studied summer months (30 % rate) wastewaters from regions intensive animal farming. Salmonella, however, was detected 40 without any clear seasonal trends, highest numbers recorded largest treatment plants. Beta-lactamase commonly been bacteria isolated humans Finland, bla

Infectious diseases account for about 3 million deaths per year. The advent of molecular techniques has led to an enormous improvement in their diagnosis, both terms sensitivity and specificity the speed with which a clinically useful result can be obtained. Digital PCR, or 3rd generation is based on series technical modifications that more sensitive techniques, resistant action inhibitors capable direct quantification without need standard curves. This review presents main applications have been developed diagnosis viral, bacterial, parasitic infections potential prospects clinical use this technology.
