With critical lessons drawn from past major earthquakes, the engineering community is appealing for a fundamental shift in existing design philosophy structures seismic zones. One strategy to endow with self-centering (SC) capability. While concept of SC not new, many novel technologies have been recently emerging that are more efficient, compact, and cost-effective; on other hand, growing controversy dispute also appearing deepening investigations. This paper presents review evolution systems both researchers practitioners, an emphasis post-tension (PT), high-performance spring, shape memory alloy (SMA) strategies. These technologies, together various energy dissipation options, form basis large part newly proposed philosophies. includes typical structural members such as beam-to-column connections, braces, dampers, shear walls, bridge piers, isolation bearings, followed by discussion dynamic behavior system-level point view. Available approaches touched upon, practical applications emerged over decades several countries including Canada, China, New Zealand, US presented. concludes executive summary covers technological advances, knowledge gaps, future research directions.

Existing framed buildings, especially those designed according to outdated seismic codes, often offer inadequate protection levels due material degradation, low amount of reinforcement and poor construction details. Among the possible retrofit strategies, elasto-plastic dissipative braces (EPDBs) can be installed provide supplemental stiffness energy dissipation in main resisting frame. Since they are based on plastic deformation sacrificial steel components, EPDBs inherently affected by scarce recentering capability, i.e., presence residual at end mainshock that could impair their effectiveness for aftershock events. As demonstrated recent sequences, there might not enough time restore (e.g., though hydraulic actuators a reaction frame) undeformed configuration structure before subsequent shock. This issue overcome through self-centering (SCDBs), equipped with dampers characterized "flag-shaped" hysteretic behavior, which facilitates immediate re-centering Despite this evident benefit, is still lack practical design procedures buildings SCDBs. To fill gap, direct displacement-based procedure SCDBs tailored building frames here conceived illustrated. The proposed method aims achieving simultaneously two performance requirements: (i) target maximum roof displacement under ultimate-limit-state event; (ii) absence significant inter-storey drifts shaking. implementation described applications reinforced concrete case-study building. Nonlinear time-history analyses carried out prove method, along comparison offered versus traditional implemented same buildings.

Abstract Cities that are adopting innovative and technology‐driven solutions to improve the city's efficiency considered smart cities . With increased attention on with self‐driving vehicles, drones, robots, designing infrastructure is only a natural extension. Smart infrastructures aim self‐diagnose, self‐power, self‐adapt, self‐heal during normal extreme operating conditions. Structural vibration control (SVC) structural health monitoring (SHM) technologies, in particular, expected play pivotal roles development of modern resilient structures. SVC methodologies intend provide supplemental damping reduce dynamic responses events. Abstract This paper presents a practical multi-level performance-based optimisation method of nonlinear viscous dampers (NVDs) for seismic retrofit existing substandard steel frames. A Maxwell model is adopted to simulate the behaviour combined damper-supporting brace system, with fractional power-law force–velocity relationship NVDs, while distributed-plasticity fibre-based section approach used beam-column members thus incorporating nonlinearity parent frame in design process. The optimum height-wise distribution damping coefficients NVDs satisfying given performance requirements identified via uniform damage (UDD) philosophy. efficiency proposed illustrated through time-history analysis 3-, 7- and 12-storey frames under both artificial natural spectrum-compatible earthquakes. Sensitivity performed investigate effects initial distribution, convergence factor uncertainty ground-motion prediction on strategy. final solution also investigated by using drift-based, velocity-based, energy-based UDD approaches identify most efficient index parameter purposes. It found that regardless selected parameter, methodology leads exhibiting lower maximum inter-storey drift, local (maximum plastic rotation) global compared an equal-cost distribution. However, drift-based generally results better performance. shown can be efficiently satisfy multiple objectives at different intensity levels earthquake excitation, line recommendations current codes. easy implement purposes represents simple yet tool NVDs.
