Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) utilizing persulfate (PS) offer great potential for wastewater treatment. Yet, the dependency on energy and chemical-intensive activation techniques, such as ultraviolet radiation transition metal ions, constrains their widespread adoption. Recognizing this limitation, researchers are turning towards piezoelectric effect-a novel, energy-efficient method PS that capitalizes innate characteristics of materials. Intriguingly, taps into weak renewable mechanical forces omnipresent in nature, ranging from wind, tides, water flow, sound, atmospheric forces. In perspective, we delve burgeoning realm piezoelectric/PS-AOPs, elucidating its fundamental principles, refinement materials, force sources, pertinent application contexts. This emerging technology harbors significant a pivotal element pretreatment may spearhead innovations future pollution control engineering.

Abstract For piezoelectric catalysis, the catalytic mechanism is a topic of great controversy, with debates centered around whether it belongs to energy band theory or screening charge effect which are similar mechanisms photocatalysis and electrochemical respectively. Due formation different intermediate active‐species during two‐electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via electro‐ photo‐catalysis, key solving this problem precisely monitoring active species involved in ORR electro‐, photo‐, piezo‐catalysis under identical condition. Here, semiconductor material, BiOBr abundant vacancies (BOB‐OV) was found remarkable activity H 2 O production by all three methods. By employing situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, evolution pathway through over BOB‐OV monitored, showed that observed photo‐catalytic process. This finding represents solid evidence supporting notion piezo‐catalytic more inclined towards photo‐catalysis rather than electro‐catalysis. Significantly, exploratory conclusion provides insight deepen our understanding piezo‐catalysis.
