Abstract We examine the role institutional pressures, at subnational level, play in generation of eco-innovations and explicitly consider how they interact with firms’ heterogeneous capabilities ownership characteristics. Theoretically, we combine elements from theory resource-based view firm to develop our hypotheses. Empirically, use a novel dataset over period 2003–2013 compiled several sources: (I) environmental regulations (city-level) China Environmental Statistical Yearbooks City Yearbooks; (II) green patents (firm-level) National Intellectual Property Administration; (III) Bureau Statistics. Our econometric analysis employs an instrumental variable (IV) approach that controls for endogeneity negative binomial multilevel methodology robustness. Business incubators (BIs) in China have predominantly exhibited a government-led characteristic, recently broadening their spatial and temporal scope extending reach to the county level. Regarding inadequacies of county-level analysis scale, this study leverages Points Interest (POI) big data overcome them. To comprehend governmental rationale construction BIs, we examine evolution dynamics BIs conjunction with policies. An economic geography framework is developed, conceptualizing as quasi-public goods productive services, incorporating considerations fiscal operations industrial structures. Focusing on Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region case study, our findings reveal that over 98% County Administrative Units (CAUs) built BIs. Using kernel density estimation Moran’s I, patterns CAUs are identified. The further classified into three categories levels using k-means algorithm, uncovering differentiated relationships between industry, finance, respective BI. Additionally, analyze relationship other facilities at micro-level, showcasing various site selection rationales. discussions highlight while tend align wealthier areas advanced industries, affluent offer location advantages whereas less wealthy prioritize quantity for political achievements. Abstract Data connectivity is driving a shift in corporate business models toward social responsibility and stakeholder orientation, but existing research has focused on the significant increase value from model platformization failed to answer question of “what kind creates high what contexts.” Business features are decomposed into three‐dimensional components technology, architecture, capability, external environment which segmented terms demand evolution peer competition.
