Technology continually reshapes our interactions with others and the broader society, environment, way we work play, possibly even think. This continuous change seems to have recently accelerated by widespread introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) tools. For those like us who are not AI experts, a simpler understand might be as combination algorithms technologies that enable machines mimic human-like cognitive functions, including problem-solving, learning from experience, recognising patterns, all guided human commands.1 Advanced capabilities, complex machine specialised decision-making processes, predominantly found in paid platforms, tailored for industrial collaborative use. Whereas other tools freely available public most them engage users natural language conversations, is, chatbots. Examples such open-source AIs include Gemini (Google-based), Meta.ai (developed Meta integrated their social media platforms), ChatGPT (OpenAI). While each platform offers distinct features functionalities, has notably revolutionised how general perceives utilises tools.2 Since its release November 2022, been adopted conversational widely used knowledge searches, marking significant shift accessibility usability everyday users. In context aquaculture, potential help drive activity towards more sustainable practices.3 ChatGPT, example, surely source information many aquaculture students farmers, an additional tool writing researching scientists. Most probably at least once fun curiosity, but also summarise information, provide definitions, interpret or translate text, revise code, searching explanation on unfamiliar concept related aquaculture. These functionalities offered chatbots, mostly based online. this editorial Reviews Aquaculture, wanted go beyond search solely past and, mix scientific curiosity trying add extra daily research tasks, asked predict future. We specifically explored predicting future trends aquafeed industry, inspired 6 out 20 papers published current issue directly focused fish nutrition.4-9 that, two questions prediction guidance, limited output 250 words. Prompts responses presented below: Q1. What will industry look end century? ChatGPT: "By century, is likely undergone transformations. With increasing demand seafood due population growth dwindling wild stocks, become dominant production. Aquafeed evolve efficient, incorporating innovative ingredients algae, insects, single-cell proteins reduce reliance traditional fishmeal oil derived wild-caught fish. Advancements biotechnology may production feed specific species, improving rates health outcomes while minimising environmental impacts. Precision feeding systems, driven IoT technologies, optimise regimes, reducing waste conversion ratios. Sustainability paramount, striving minimal impact through use renewable energy sources, closed-loop efficient resource utilisation. Vertical integration consolidation within lead emergence large multinational corporations dominating market, driving standardisation quality control. Furthermore, consumer preferences ethically sustainably sourced transparency traceability throughout supply chain, influencing formulation marketing products. Overall, 2100 characterised innovation, sustainability, technological meet growing global safeguarding planet." Q2. As researcher sustainability aiming I'm seeking guidance impactful topics focus on. top three key areas I should prioritise ensure 2100? "Alternative Protein Sources: Investigate develop alternative protein sources insect meal, proteins, algae dependency soy-based ingredients. Optimise methods scalability, nutritional quality, cost-effectiveness footprint. Circular Economy Approaches: Explore circular economy models recycling upcycling by-products streams industries. Research converting organic into high-quality ingredients, thus virgin resources mitigating pollution. Nutritional Optimisation Feeding: Focus fine-tuning formulations precision techniques, leveraging advances science additives. Develop personalised strategies life stages, conditions efficiency, minimise nutrient loss, overall impact." By analysing first prediction, felt innovation optimistic somewhat idealised, if utopian, sci-fi perspective, where technology-driven solutions fix problems. it highlights ambitious goals reflected recent research, predictions seem overlooking important factors could affect feasibility. instance, several studies trend less usage fish-based already taking place. However, complexities new need highlighted, mainly scaling up production, ensuring adequacy, understanding rheological organoleptic properties raw materials during manufacturing, addressing ecological ramifications large-scale cultivation materials. Additionally, assumption perpetuated community approaches always guarantee though there enough scientific, nor quantitative, evidence support that. Another critical concern emphasis vertical integration, which well reality require further considerations monopolistic control lack diversity, hiding rather than promoting local socio-economic sustainability. Reading then recommended topics, were disappointed, were, bit naively, expecting truly out-of-the-box suggestions. But here, see very little imagination no sci-fiction suggestions, reassuring creativity yet risk being replaced computer, now. summarised well-known, hot targeted nutrition researchers years. Investigations sources," "Circular approaches," "Nutritional optimisation feeding" relevant much welcomed, they indeed can contribute aquafeed. Yet, lacked fundamental advancing primarily depends ecological, social, economic perspectives, potentially context-specific diverse settings stakeholder needs. One insights gain exercise useful tool, increasingly be, utilised R&D. Not differently abacus, calculator, personal spreadsheet programs, make sense using it. It worth noting outputs depend prompts formulated, seen few words, constraining depth explanation. constraint becomes evident when comparing predictions, scalability was mentioned addressed second. Thus, feel caveat reported happen enthusiasts: possible misunderstanding misuse utilisation interpreting findings conceptualising unlikely produce any novel research. this, believe reading papers, written experts intimate direct expertise sector, expand reasonings, ultimately moving better hope you enjoy Aquaculture.
