Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in awake infants has the potential to reveal how early developing brain gives rise cognition and behavior. However, infant fMRI poses significant methodological challenges that have hampered wider adoption. The present work takes stock after collection of a substantial amount data across multiple studies from two labs at different institutions. We leveraged these glean insights on participant recruitment, experimental design, acquisition could be useful consider for future studies. Across 766 sessions, we explored factors influenced much usable were obtained per session (average 9 minutes). age an predicted whether they would successfully enter scanner (younger was more likely) and, if did enter, number minutes functional retained preprocessing. also by assigned sex (female more), paradigm (movies better than blocks events), stimulus content (social abstract). In addition, assessed value attempting collect experiments session, approach yielded one experiment averaging all sessions (including those with no data). Although any given scan is unpredictable, findings support feasibility suggest practices optimize research.

Abstract Cortical folding begins in utero as sulci emerge and continues postnatally deepen. However, the timeline mechanisms underlying postnatal sulcal development remain unknown. Using structural quantitative magnetic resonance imaging infants from birth to one year of age, we longitudinally measured macroanatomical microstructural major that between 16th 31st gestational weeks. We find earlier are deeper at deepen a slower rate than later emerging sulci. Sulci also become wider, thicker, microstructurally denser, while their curvature decreases. Notably, mean depth is predicted by weighted sum span, thickness, curvature, tissue microstructure, with differential weights across Analysis local along sulcus reveals portions (fundi) have higher density surrounding walls. These data reveal deepening nonuniform depends on time emergence utero, multiple factors. Together, these findings important ramifications for theories cortical elucidating neurodevelopmental disorders delays.

Most studies on the development of visual system have focused mechanisms shaping early stages up to level primary cortex (V1). Much less is known about after V1 that handle higher functions fundamental everyday life. The standard model for maturation these areas it occurs sequentially, according positions in adult hierarchy. Over the past several decades, behavioral methods suitable for use with human infants have revealed detailed characteristics of perceptual development, but causal mechanisms that drive these changes remain elusive. Neuroimaging hold promise clarifying by reducing hypothesis space theories how biological and experiential factors interact as abilities emerge become refined during early development. Here we review milestones in key areas development infancy childhood, summarize potential value-added neural measures, highlight new analytic techniques can further clarify future. Abstract By adulthood, humans rapidly identify objects from sparse visual displays and across significant disruptions to their appearance. What are the minimal conditions needed achieve robust recognition abilities when might these develop? To answer questions, we investigated upper-limits of children’s object abilities. We found that children as young 3 years successfully identified at speeds 100 ms (both forward backward masked) under disrupted viewing conditions. contrast, a range computational models implemented with biologically informed properties or optimized for did not reach child-level performance. Models only matched if they received more examples than capable experiencing. These findings highlight robustness human system in absence extensive experience important developmental constraints building plausible machines. How do infants praise the Lord? While we cannot say definitively how this is so, exploring idea—particularly in context of intergenerational worship and formation—offers rich theological insights. Scripture declares, “Out mouth babes nursing infants, you have perfected praise” (Matthew 21:16; Psalm 8:2, NKJV), suggesting that (1) indeed God, (2) their by Him. Rather than dismissing as purely metaphorical, article draws on St. Augustine’s concept jubilus, a song with no intelligible words, to explore infants’ babbling might be seen form worship, what learn from it if thus seen.
