Abstract Background By May 7, 2023, COVID-19 had significantly impacted Japan, with 33,728,909 infections and 74,663 deaths reported. Hiroshima Prefecture alone recorded 816,354 cases 1,373 deaths. The World Health Organization emphasized the importance of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) for preventing infectious disease transmission. Individual NPIs, such as hand hygiene, mask wearing, avoiding crowded places, comprise simple everyday measures that individuals can personally undertake to protect themselves others from contracting transmitting respiratory infections. Japan’s Cabinet Secretariat also recommended these measures. Previous studies investigated effectiveness NPIs but often used relatively short data-collection periods. Starting in 2020, adopted a unique public health surveillance policy standardized forms. present analysis examines association between individual Methods Data were collected at 14 PCR centers April 1, 2021, August 3, 2022 Prefecture. Participants filled out J-SPEED-style form, which included items on demographic information, job type, symptoms, NPIs. data analyzed NPI compliance rates, infection rates relation adoption, adjusted risk ratios, obtained using multivariate log-binomial regression model. Results A total 1,125,188 tested 4th 7th waves analyzed. Among study population, rate increased through various waves, highest (8.3%) seen wave. Adults aged 40–49 most commonly tested, while those 60–69 lowest rates. Wearing masks/washing hands was followed NPI. Compliance decreased waves. Individuals adhering lower number preventive correlated reduced risk. Conclusion This provides evidence guide prevention policies. Simultaneous adherence multiple proved more effective COVID-19. Despite changes viral strains infected cases, washing/mask refraining travel, dining associated reduction infection. Our findings are likely be applicable future outbreaks.

Diversity of physical encounters and social interactions in urban environments are known to spur economic productivity innovation cities, while also foster capital resilience communities. However, mobility restrictions during the pandemic have forced people substantially reduce encounters, raising questions on implications such behavioral changes. In this paper, we study how income diversity changed different periods throughout pandemic, using a large-scale, privacy-enhanced dataset more than one million anonymized mobile phone users four large US collected across three years spanning before pandemic. We find that decreased (by 15% 30%) has persisted through late 2021, even though aggregated metrics recovered pre-pandemic levels. Counterfactual analyses show reduction outside activities (higher rates staying at home) was major factor contributed early stages changes including lower willingness explore new places visitation preferences further worsened long-term encounters. Our findings suggest could long-lasting negative effects diversity, provide for managing trade-off between stringency COVID-19 policies as move beyond

The increasing concentration of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere is causing a global environmental crisis, forcing significant reductions emissions. Among existing capture technologies, microalgae-guided sequestration seen as one more promising and sustainable solutions. present review article compares emissions EU with other economies, outlines EU’s climate policy together current proposed regulations. Furthermore, it summarizes state knowledge on controlled microalgal cultures, indicates importance phycoremediation methods, assesses microalgae-based systems for long-term storage utilization CO2. It also how far microalgae technologies within have developed quantitative technological levels, prospects future development. literature overview has shown that large-scale take-up solutions production use biomass hampered by economic, technological, legal barriers. Unsuitable conditions are an additional impediment, operators to implement maintain appropriate temperature lighting photobioreactors, considerably driving up associated investment operational costs.

Upon its irruption in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic spurred a flurry of reflection on potential long-term effects urban mobility. Despite widespread speculation about likely permanent impacts mobility, few academic accounts have re-examined extent to which these speculations were warranted once is over. To this end, present article explores retrospective perceptions key stakeholders regarding mobility regime, through qualitative case study Barcelona Metropolitan Region, involving 22 semi-structured interviews. Approaching lens sociotechnical regimes and multilevel perspective (MLP), we identify perceived changes regime aftermath pandemic, as well four main obstacles effecting transformative change towards sustainable during "window opportunity" created by pandemic. Our findings suggest that has generally not led significant with two exceptions: normalisation teleworking, consolidation tactical urbanism approaches street redesign. These confirm obduracy existing while pointing promising inroads might result transformation or destabilization current regime.

Hurricane Ian in 2022 was a destructive category 4 Atlantic hurricane striking the state of Florida, which caused hundreds deaths and injuries, catastrophic property damage, an economic loss more than $112 billion. Before landfall government issued evacuation orders high-risk zones to reduce casualties injuries. However, there is limited data available monitor actual patterns compliance with at large geographic scale. This study utilizes human mobility (i.e. SafeGraph Weekly Pattern) analyse spatial during 2022. The objectives include three key aspects: 1) proposing analytical workflow that detect disasters other emergency events; 2) identifying significant patterns, 3) revealing variations affected areas. Using science analysis techniques, this detected notable changes population movements, both within Florida nationwide, are potentially linked hurricane-induced evacuation. distance decay pattern flows from demonstrates propensity for individuals relocate nearby areas hurricane. Furthermore, increase outflows impacted suggests effectiveness mandatory orders. A pronounced designated points public awareness zone designation. provides large-scale, fine-resolution behaviours natural cannot be easily traditional sources. workflows provide actionable tools agencies policymakers evaluate improve plans future disasters.
