As billions of nocturnal avian migrants traverse North America, twice a year they must contend with landscape changes driven by natural and anthropogenic forces, including the rapid growth artificial glow night sky. While airspaces facilitate migrant passage, terrestrial landscapes serve as essential areas to restore energy reserves often act refugia-making it critical holistically identify stopover locations understand drivers use. Here, we leverage over 10 million remote sensing observations develop seasonal contiguous United States layers bird density. In 70% our models, skyglow highly influential consistently positive predictor migration density across States. This finding points potential an expanding threat migrants: peri-urban illuminated may ecological traps at macroscales that increase mortality birds during migration.

Biological rhythms have a crucial role in shaping the biology and ecology of organisms. Light pollution is known to disrupt these rhythms, evidence emerging that chemical pollutants can cause similar disruption. Conversely, biological influence effects toxicity chemicals. Thus, by drawing insights from extensive study biomedical light research, we greatly improve our understanding pollution. This Essay advocates for integration rhythmicity into research gain more comprehensive how affect wildlife ecosystems. Despite historical barriers, recent experimental technological advancements now facilitate ecotoxicology, offering unprecedented, high-resolution data across spatiotemporal scales. Recognizing importance will be essential understanding, predicting, mitigating complex ecological repercussions

Climate change is impacting marine ecosystems throughout the circumpolar Arctic, altering seasonal habitats and food bases for fishes, seabirds, mammals. Arctic Subarctic regions provide resources resident species that migrate to north from more southerly regions. Changes in northerly latitudes thus impact endemic as well non-endemic animals. Herein, we review what known about climate-driven changes migration patterns of vertebrates, including: 1) residents with movements – those mammals complete their entire life cycle within but exhibit movements; 2) Breeding migrants many seabirds enter breed subsequently south fall; 3) Summer visitors feeding certain boreal arrive during northern summer feed on abundant prey though they elsewhere. Migratory are often driven by timing extent sea ice, which defines suitable habitat some animals limits access open water others. Longer open-water seasons, warmer ocean temperatures, stronger winds have resulted earlier production blooms spring often, extended open-ocean plankton into late summer, resulting altered types distributions. Abstract Birds must contend with an array of anthropogenic threats during their migratory journeys. Many migrants are killed due to encounters artificial light, introduced species, pollutants, and other hazards, while survivors these can suffer longer-lasting negative effects. The nonlethal effects on migrating birds less well understood than direct mortality, yet both potentially contribute population declines. For example, building collisions frequently kill birds, but the numbers that survive impaired ability fly, refuel, or navigate destination time is not understood. Though immediately fatal, such injuries lead delayed mortality and, ultimately, reduced lifetime reproductive success. Furthermore, likely encounter multiple journeys, which interact synergistically further reduce fitness. instance, light pollution attracts disorients migrants, increasing likelihood window strikes, surviving may be more vulnerable predation from predators. While considerable attention has focused lethal threats, here, we review eight types migration, interactions, pathways through they exert fitness costs. In doing so, identify knowledge gaps suggest areas for future research. absence information, propose greatest reduction in cumulative impacts hazards will achieved by addressing threat types, like at night, compound impact additional threats. The aim of this study was to examine effects various daylight exposure during the 24-h light-dark (L-D) cycle on growth performance, skeletal health, and welfare state in broilers. Environmental photoperiod related circadian clock, L-D cycle, are important factors maintaining productive pathophysiological homeostasis, psychological reaction humans animals. Currently, lighting programs as management tools for providing a satisfactory environmental condition have been used commercial broiler production. Four hundred thirty-two 1-d-old Rose 308 chicks were assigned 24 pens (18 birds/pen). randomly 1 4 thermal control rooms, then birds exposed (n=6): 1) 12L, 2) 16L, 3) 18L, or 4) 20L at 15 d age. Lighting program bird body weight, behavioral patterns, bone stress levels evaluated from 35 45, respectively. 12L well 16L groups, reared under short photoperiods close natural had improved production leg suppressed compared both 18L groups. Especially, heavier final weight averaged daily gain (P < 0.05), higher BMD BMC with longer wider femur lower H/L ratio more reached observer touch test 0.05) but spent shorter latency tonic immobility 0.05). Taken together, data suggest that supplying 12 h light improves performance health while decreasing broilers, making it potentially suitable approach

Sustainable development and energy savings are crucial to the significant worldwide trend in smart city-related research projects. In this regard, public lighting systems have great energy-saving potential. Nevertheless, while citizen engagement is a key element of most conceptualisations cities, many projects fail take account citizen’s viewpoint. Applying citizen-centric design model, objective study examine affective impressions local residents luminous environments their areas, taking activities they carry out there. Kansei Engineering employed connect elements with citizens’ responses. Lighting 18 urban spaces were evaluated by 310 residents. The results show that subjective assessments evaluation can be explained following dimensions: Expressive-interesting, Innovative-efficient, Defined-sufficient, Formal-uniform Glaring. relationship these dimensions social shows should generate, residents, sensations consistent nature activities. Urban must create feeling innovation (being up-to-date contemporary) if it seen as caring for environment. These findings may valuable governments, architects, engineers, designers when developing strategies ensure designs being efficient, sustainable, environmentally friendly.
