Over the last 30 years, optical property community has shifted from conducting dissolved organic matter (DOM) measurements on new complex mixtures in natural and engineered systems to furthering ecosystem understanding context of past, present, future carbon (C) cycling regimes. However, appropriate use properties understand DOM behavior biogeochemical is recent debate. This critical review provides an extensive survey literature across atmospheric, marine, terrestrial biospheres using a categorical approach that probes each biosphere its subdivisions. Using this approach, rubric variables, such as productive nature, C rate, inputs, water quality, sets foundation for interpreting commonly used metrics fluorescence index (FI), humification (HIX), specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA254). Although the impact of land conversion on carbon mineralization in paddy soils has received increasing attention, coupled roles soil microdiversity and chemodiversity these processes are largely unknown. Understanding the degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is vital for optimizing DOM control. However, microbe-mediated transformation during wastewater treatment remains poorly characterized. Here, microbes and along full-scale biotreatment processes were simultaneously characterized using comparative genomics high-resolution mass spectrometry-based reactomics. Biotreatments significantly increased DOM's aromaticity unsaturation due to overproduced lignin polyphenol analogs. was diversified by over five times in richness, with thousands nitrogenous sulfur-containing compounds generated through oxidoreduction, functional group transfer, C–N C–S bond formation. Network analysis demonstrated microbial division labor transformation. their roles determined traits rather than taxa. Specifically, network module hubs exhibited rapid growth potentials broad substrate affinities but deficient xenobiotics-metabolism-associated genes. They mainly correlated liable consumption its recalcitrant compounds. In contrast, connectors peripherals potential degraders slow growth. showed specialized associations fewer molecules probably fed on metabolites hub microbes. Thus, developing technologies (e.g., carriers) selectively enrich peripheral consequently decouple may advance removal.
