This
phenomenological
study
examines
the
characteristics
that
contribute
to
development
of
resiliency
in
veterans
Operation
Iraqi
Freedom
(OIF)
and
Enduring
(OEF)
who
experienced
combat-related
amputations.
The
project
comprised
recorded
semi-structured,
in-depth
interviews
with
10
OIF
OEF
veteran
male
amputees.
We
transcribed
analyzed
resulting
data
yielding
six
emergent
themes:
grief,
will
live
fight,
amputation
adjustment
issues,
social
support
as
a
protective
factor,
coping
skills,
posttraumatic
growth.

BackgroundChronic

Introduction
There
is
very
good
international
research
on
deployment-related
mental
disorders
in
military
personnel.
The
incidence
rates
show
a
wide

strategy
