Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an environmental contaminant ubiquitous in water resources, which as a xenobiotic and carcinogenic agent, severely endangers human health. The development of techniques for its efficient removal therefore highly sought after. Herein, we demonstrate unprecedented zirconium-based MOF (PCN-999) possessing Zr6 biformate-bridged (Zr6)2 clusters simultaneously, exhibits exceptional PFOA uptake 1089 mg/g (2.63 mmol/g), representing ca. 50% increase over the previous record MOFs. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies computational analysis revealed that offer additional open coordination sites hosting PFOA. coordinated PFOAs further enhance interaction between free physical adsorption, boosting adsorption capacity to unparalleled high standard. Our findings represent major step forward fundamental understanding MOF-based mechanism, paving way toward rational design next-generation adsorbents per- polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) removal.
