Despite 20 years of control on eutrophication, episodes summer hypoxia still occur in the Loire estuary, impacting water quality and posing a key scientific management challenge. This work aimed to quantify contribution benthic compartment estuary by direct measurement water–sediment fluxes an in-depth understanding seasonal variations oxides phosphorus stocks. During summer’s low-discharge period, results show that iron oxide-rich deposit is stable under hypoxic conditions, limiting release dissolved into overlying column. The high nitrate content column appears be important oxidizer during periods, leakage aggravation hypoxia. exceptional winter flood, significant sediment erosion associated with bubbling phenomena (attributed methane efflux) created severe fractures stimulated exchange. following months, these were progressively filled, which decreased intensity fluxes. However, due residence time simple model demonstrated contributions sufficient directly (by oxygen consumption) or indirectly promoting ammonia oxidation) affect stock period. Our study demonstrates importance occurrence obvious lack knowledge illustrate biogeochemical functioning estuary.

Hypoxia and sulfide are inducing potential damage to aquatic organisms. However, the effects of hypoxia on their immune systems molecular mechanisms not fully understood. In present study, clam Tegillarca granosa was exposed alone or in combination with (0.1, 0.5 mM) investigate physiological transcriptomic responses haemolymph. The IBR analysis revealed that moderate stimulated via increasing total hemocyte counts, phagocytic activity, antibacterial antioxidant activity. many critical signaling pathways (Toll Imd, FoxO, NLR) biological processes (antimicrobial/antibacterial peptide, interferon, interleukin, leukocyte, lymphocyte, mitophagy) involved immunostimulation. Our results would offer insights into sulfide-tolerant this species provide a useful tool for assessing integrated impacts shellfish.

Abstract. Coastal hypoxia is a major environmental problem of increasing severity. A global 40-year observational gridded climate data record and 21st-century projections from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) under RCP8.5 (Representative Concentration Pathway) forcing are analyzed for long-term linear trends in summer-month conditions, with focus on warming-related pressures coastal oxygen levels. Projected surface temperature conditions compared to observations over 16-year overlapping period (2006–2021). Median 2006–2100 along coast 0.32 ∘C, −1.6, −1.2 mmol m−3 per decade sea-surface (SST), saturation concentration at (surface capacity), vertical-minimum concentration, respectively. These point more rapid deterioration than experienced recent decades; projected median SST capacity 148 % 118 corresponding observed rates. Companion analysis other models scenarios indicates moderate RCP4.5 updated SSP5–8.5 (Shared Socioeconomic scenarios, respectively, 37 %–77 103 %–196 CESM projections. rates documented hypoxic areas higher ocean. Warming declines tend be fastest high latitudes, one region where new may emerge as deteriorate. There considerable pressure current areas, since future any magnitude will make severe. The can inform management strategies protect water quality ecosystem services.

Abstract Nutrient-related environmental degradation in coastal waters is a continuing global problem. Bivalve shellfish farms show nutrient removal capabilities similar to some traditional management strategies and places have been incorporated into programs help achieve water quality goals. Bioextractive varies by farmed species influenced environment parameters; thus, data information for both are needed estimate mitigation potential of farms. The Farm Aquaculture Resource Management (FARM) model, calibrated species, uses local farming practice simulate interactions between the population optimize cultivation practices economic gain. We model predict nitrogen Eastern oyster ( Crassostrea virginica ) with specific field experimental on oysters, their environment, farm Long Island Sound, CT, USA. Previous FARM applications were not validated data. In harvest when ready (HWR) scenario (oysters harvested they reach size), removed 159 kg N ha −1 year while non-HWR (all oysters at one time) 274 . These estimates within range previously reported in-water bioextraction studies Northeastern robust outputs from this can be reliably used marine spatial planning efforts managers benefits that could achieved through new or expanded eastern eutrophic environments.
