Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are a in aquatic environments due to possible adverse effects on the environment and humans. This study assessed occurrence mass flows CECs Sweden’s three largest lakes 24 associated rivers. The distribution 105 was investigated, comprising 71 pharmaceuticals, 13 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), eight industrial chemicals, four personal care products (PCPs), parabens, two pesticides, other (mostly anthropogenic markers). is first systematic main one report environmental concentrations chemicals tributyl citrate acetate 2,2'-dimorpholinyldiethyl-ether. ∑CEC concentration generally higher river water (31-5200 ng/L; median 440 ng/L) than lake (36-900 190 ng/L). At urban sites, seasonal variations were observed for PCPs also antihistamines, antidiabetics, antineoplastic agents, antibiotics, fungicides. CEC load 180 g/day (range 4.0-4300 g/day), with total 5000 Lake Vänern, 510 Vättern, 5600 Mälaren. All used as drinking reservoirs, so further investigations impact ecosystem human health needed.

Characterizing the occurrence, sources, and fate of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in lake–river systems serves as an important foundation for constraining potential impacts OMPs on ecosystem functions these critical landscape features. In this work, we combined suspect nontarget screening with mass balance modeling to investigate OMP contamination Onondaga Lake–Three Rivers system New York. Suspect enabled by liquid chromatography–high-resolution spectrometry led confirmation quantification 105 water samples collected throughout system, which were grouped their concentration patterns into wastewater-derived mixed-source clusters via hierarchical cluster analysis. Four (i.e., galaxolidone, diphenylphosphinic acid, N-butylbenzenesulfonamide, triisopropanolamine) prioritized identified based characteristic vertical distribution during thermal stratification Lake. Mass performed using discharge data highlighted export from Lake Three a major contributor budget system. Overall, work demonstrated utility integrated framework that can be adapted characterization, assessment, load apportionment similar surface systems.

Recently, the potent antiandrogen 4-methyl-7-diethylaminocoumarin (C47) and its potential transformation products 4-methyl-7-ethylaminocoumarin (C47T1) 4-methyl-7-aminocoumarin (C47T2) were identified as novel environmental contaminants. We assessed for first time sources, distribution, fate of these compounds in aquatic systems using Holtemme River (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany), which is a hotspot To this end, wastewater-treatment plant (WWTP) influent effluent samples, surface water samples over 3 years, longitudinal profiles water, sediment, gammarids analyzed. From profile river stretch, WWTP Silstedt was sole point source Holtemme, exposure concentrations low micrograms per liter range could be recorded continuously years. Analysis showed approximately half C47 into C47T1 C47T2 but no complete removal.
