Benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVSs) are chemicals used to mitigate UV-induced damage manufactured goods. Their presence in aquatic environments and biota raises concerns, as certain BUVSs activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), which is linked adverse effects fish. However, potencies of AhR agonists species sensitivities activation poorly understood. This study evaluated toxicity three using embryotoxicity assays. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos exposed by microinjection suffered dose-dependent increases mortality, with LD50 values 4772, 11 608, 56 292 ng/g-egg for UV-P, UV-9, UV-090, respectively. The AhR2 were assessed a luciferase reporter gene assay COS-7 cells transfected zebrafish eight other fishes. rank order potency from all nine was UV-P > UV-9 UV-090. AhR2s among differed up 100-fold. An approximate reversed sensitivity observed compared 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo[p]dioxin, prototypical agonist. Despite this, pre-existing quantitative outcome pathway linking embryo lethality could predict embryotoxicities zebrafish.

The ban/elimination of legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) has led to a dramatic increase in the production use various emerging PFASs over past decade. However, trophodynamics many aquatic food webs remain poorly understood. In this study, samples seawaters marine organisms including 15 fish species, 21 crustacean two cetacean species were collected from northern South China Sea (SCS) investigate trophic biomagnification potential PFASs. Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide was found seawater via suspect screening (concentration up 1.50 ng/L) but not biota, indicating its negligible bioaccumulation potential. Ultraviolet absorbents (UVAs) and industrial antioxidants (IAs) are contaminants of emerging concern. In this study, we investigated the distribution partitioning these in surface water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), sediment, various tissues lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) northern pike (Esox lucius) from St. Lawrence River (SLR), Quebec, Canada. Results indicated that 2,6-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (BHTQ) was dominant contaminant dissolved phase with median concentrations 43, 15, 123 ng/L for three sampling sites, respectively. Surface water collected downstream a major city showed higher levels UVAs, BHTQ, diphenylamine compared to upstream, suggesting influence urban activities on contamination SLR. SPM greater sorption capacities most target those sediment. Different profiles were found pike, implying accumulation UVAs IAs fish depends their feeding behavior. The field-based tissue-specific bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) frequently detected (log BAF 1.5-4.2) generally comparable or lower than Estimation Program Interface modeling results (1.4-5.0), indicating some may be less bioaccumulative previously expected.

Antibiotics are emerging pollutants widely existing in the aquatic environment with adverse effects on both humans and organisms. Understanding bioaccumulation of antibiotics organisms is important for their risk assessment. Observations metrics (including bioconcentration factor, biomagnification trophic magnification biota-sediment accumulation factor) reviewed this contribution. It revealed that close attention should be paid to enrofloxacin, sulfamethiazole, doxycycline, sulfadimidine, clarithromycin, azithromycin, chloramphenicol, because they have high potential logarithm factor values beyond a threshold (3.3 L/kg) stipulated REACH regulation. Physicochemical properties (e.g., pH-dependent octanol-water partition coefficient liposome-water distribution coefficient), biological characteristics lipid content, biotransformation potential, growth stages, feeding habits) as well environmental factors presence sediment, pH, salinity, exposure concentrations, co-existence dissolved organic matter, heavy metals, microplastics) can control One-compartment multi-compartment toxicokinetic models summarized. The mainly focused fish, suggesting more efforts needed construct other species. Knowledge gaps critical research directions were highlighted.

Ultraviolet (UV) absorbents and industrial antioxidants are contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), but little is known about their distribution in Arctic wildlife, as well how these vary over time, across regions, between species. We used archived egg samples to examine the temporal patterns 26 UV three seabird species (black-legged kittiwakes Rissa tridactyla, thick-billed murres Uria lomvia, northern fulmars Fulmarus glacialis) sampled Canada 1975 2019. Various synthetic phenolic antioxidants, aromatic secondary amines, benzotriazole stabilizers, organic filters were detected eggs. Overall, had higher levels several antioxidants. Most target reached peak concentrations at different points during 44-year study period or did not significantly time. None contaminant have increased recent years. The antioxidant 2-6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol (BHT) was most frequently eggs, its level declined course kittiwake eggs change fulmars. Future research should effects CECs on health avian species, sources, exposure pathways contaminants.

As emerging contaminants, micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) are widely present in aquatic environments and often ingested by organisms. However, the vivo trafficking fate of MNPs remain largely unknown. Here, we developed near-infrared (NIR) aggregated-induced emission (AIE) fluorophore-labeled microplastics (2 μm) nanoplastics (100 nm) as models MNPs. This model was based on NIR-AIE technique with strong at second (NIR-IIII) window, which overcomes interference autofluorescence observation artifacts detection commercial fluorescent-labeled particles. Due to its deep tissue penetration noninvasiveness, dynamic process accumulation transport individuals can be tracked NIR imaging. We then directly visualized quantified uptake depuration processes MPs NPs zebrafish. The results showed that were mainly accumulated fish gut, distribution heterogeneous. tended accumulate more fore mid areas gut compared NPs. Besides, both could large quantities locally might cause intestinal obstruction. slowly during initial exposure followed rapid sustained gut. Chemicals mainly exist in ecosystems as mixtures, and understanding predicting their effects are major challenges ecotoxicology. While the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) toxicokinetic–toxicodynamic (TK–TD) models show promise mechanistic approaches chemical risk assessment, there is still a lack of methodology to incorporate AOP into TK–TD model. Here, we describe novel approach that integrates predict mixture toxicity using metal mixtures (specifically Cd–Cu) case study. We preliminarily constructed an through temporal transcriptome analysis together with confirmatory bioassays.
