Quorum sensing (QS) of various microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, microalgae) today attracts the attention researchers mainly from point view clarifying biochemical basics this general biological phenomenon, establishing chemical compounds that regulate it, and studying mechanisms its realization. Such information is primarily aimed at use in solving environmental problems development effective antimicrobial agents. This review oriented on other aspects application such knowledge; particular, it discusses role QS elaboration prospective biocatalytic systems for different biotechnological processes carried out under aerobic anaerobic conditions (synthesis enzymes, polysaccharides, organic acids, etc.). Particular paid to biocatalysts, which have a heterogeneous microbial composition. The priorities how trigger quorum response immobilized cells maintain their long-term productive stable metabolic functioning are also discussed. Quorum-sensing bacteria (QSB) are crucial factors for microbial communication, yet their ecological role in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) remains unclear. Here, we developed a method to identify QSB by comparing 16S rRNA gene sequences. 388 activated sludge samples collected from 130 WWTPs across China primarily were identified as rare taxa and conditionally taxa. A co-occurrence network shared all communities revealed that exhibited higher average clustering coefficient (0.46) than non-QSB (0.15). Individual networks demonstrated quorum sensing microbiomes positively correlated with robustness complexity, including link density. We confirmed keystones nodes have positive impact on complexity influencing modularity through structural equation model. Meanwhile, directly contributed maintaining (r = 0.29, P < 0.05). Hence, play an important promoting stability. Furthermore, associated the functional composition of 0.33, 0.01), especially denitrification capacity 0.45, 0.001). Overall, elucidated significance provided support QS-based regulation communities.

Anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) is valuable for the treatment of high concentration organic wastewater but hampered from further development by poor stability. Quorum sensing (QS) has been shown as an effective strategy to enhance stability AnGS, whereas long-term resistance and underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. This work investigates reinforcing effect QS on AnGS internal regulation mechanisms. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was maintained at preshock level (90–93%) after multiple temperature shocks in N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs)-induced system. AHLs-mediated led increase gene abundance four hydrophobic amino acids with protein (PN) increasing 33.1%, which optimized construction protective barrier extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). AHLs also reshaped functional microbial community enhanced metabolic activities, promoting both hydrogenotrophic methanotrophic methanogenic pathways. In addition, Geobacter Methanothrix increased 4.4% 2.3% under stimulation exogenous AHLs, direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) pathway. study provides a enhancing face environmental gives comprehensive theoretical foundation anaerobic biological treatment.
