Plastics–microorganism interactions have aroused growing environmental and ecological concerns. However, previous studies concentrated mainly on the direct paid little attention to ecotoxicology effects of phthalates (PAEs), a common plastic additive that is continuously released accumulates in environment. Here, we provide insights into impacts PAEs dissemination antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among microorganisms. Dimethyl phthalate (DMP, model PAE) at environmentally relevant concentrations (2–50 μg/L) significantly boosted plasmid-mediated conjugation transfer ARGs intrageneric, intergeneric, wastewater microbiota by up 3.82, 4.96, 4.77 times, respectively. The experimental molecular dynamics simulation results unveil strong interaction between DMP molecules phosphatidylcholine bilayer cell membrane, which lowers membrane lipid fluidity increases permeability favor ARGs. In addition, increased reactive oxygen species generation conjugation-associated gene overexpression under stress also contribute transfer. This study provides fundamental knowledge PAE–bacteria broaden our understanding risks plastics, especially niches with colonized microbes, guide control ARG spreading.

The emergence and rapid spread of antibiotic resistance seriously compromise the clinical efficacy current therapies, representing a serious public health threat worldwide. Generally, drug-susceptible bacteria can acquire through genetic mutation or gene transfer, among which horizontal transfer (HGT) plays dominant role. It is widely acknowledged that sub-inhibitory concentrations antibiotics are key drivers in promoting transmission resistance. However, accumulating evidence recent years has shown addition to antibiotics, non-antibiotics also accelerate genes (ARGs). Nevertheless, roles potential mechanisms non-antibiotic factors ARGs remain largely underestimated. In this review, we depict four pathways HGT their differences, including conjugation, transformation, transduction vesiduction. We summarize accounting for enhanced underlying molecular mechanisms. Finally, discuss limitations implications studies.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are hotspots for the exchange of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) between different bacterial taxa in environment. Propagation (AMR) is a global public health issue that needs special attention concerning horizontal gene transfer (HGT) under micro-nano plastics (MNPs) pressure. Interactions MNPs microbes, or mere persistence environment (either water soil), influence microbial expressions, affecting autochthonous microbiomes, their resistomes, overall ecosystem. The adsorption range co-contaminants on leads to increased interaction pollutants with microbes resulting changes AMR, virulence, toxin production, etc. However, accurately estimating extent MNP infestation agroecosystems remains challenging. main limitation level contamination agroecosystems, surface subsurface waters, sediments lack standardized protocols extraction MPs analytical detection methods from complex high organic content matrices. Nonetheless, recent advances matrices matter highly promising. This review aims provide an overview relevant information available date summarize already existing knowledge about mechanisms MNP-microbe interactions including factors HGT AMR. In-depth enhanced ARGs propagation could raise needed awareness, future consequences emergence multidrug-resistant bacteria.

The environmental dissemination of extracellular antibiotic resistance genes (eARGs) in wastewater and natural water bodies has aroused growing ecological concerns. coexisting chemical pollutants are known to markedly affect the eARGs transfer behaviors microbial community, but detailed interactions specific impacts remain elusive so far. Here, we revealed a concentration-dependent impact dimethyl phthalate (DMP) several other types esters (common released from plastics) on transformation eARGs. DMP exposure at an environmentally relevant concentration (10 μg/L) resulted 4.8-times raised frequency Acinetobacter baylyi severely suppressed high (1000 μg/L). promotion by low-concentration was attributed multiple mechanisms, including increased bacterial mobility membrane permeability facilitate uptake improved DMP-bounded (via noncovalent interaction) enzymatic degradation (with DNase activity). Similar promoting effects were also found real biofilm systems. In contrast, higher-concentration disrupting DNA structure. Our findings highlight potentially underestimated spreading aquatic environments due deepen our understanding risks biological-chemical combined pollution bodies.
