Large volumes of water are used in energy production for both primary (e.g., fuel extraction) and secondary electricity). In countries such as China, with a large internal trade fuels long-distance transmission grids, this can result considerable inequalities. Previous research focused on the impacts at national provincial levels, which is too coarse to identify spatial differences make specific case studies. Here, we take next step toward spatially explicit economically integrated water-use assessment by combining bottom-up approach city-level multiregional input–output model. Specifically, examine consumption distinguishing between level coal mines, oil gas fields, power plants first time. Solar desalination and fog harvesting are two common ways to obtain fresh water, both promising methods solve the water shortage problem. A prerequisite for the rational development and utilization of regional water resources is measurement stress. In this study, from perspective footprints, we took proportion agricultural footprint within total resource usage Xinjiang (hereafter referred to as XJ) an example measure its stress index explore state in region corresponding driving factors.
