Persulfate (PS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for pollutant removal have attracted extensive interest, but some controversies about the identification of reactive species were usually observed. This critical review aims to comprehensively introduce basic concepts and rectify cognitive biases appeals pay more attention experimental details in PS-AOPs, so as accurately explore reaction mechanisms. The scientifically summarizes character, generation, different species. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are a growing research field with large variety of different process variants and materials being tested at laboratory scale. However, despite extensive in recent years decades, many have not been transitioned to pilot- full-scale operation. One major concern the inconsistent experimental approaches applied across studies that impede identification, comparison, upscaling most promising AOPs. The aim this tutorial review is streamline future on development new solutions for advanced by providing guidance comparable scalable experiments. We discuss developments catalytic, ozone-based, radiation-driven, other AOPs, outline perspectives needs. Since standardized procedures available we propose basic rules key parameters lab-scale evaluation AOPs including selection suitable probe compounds scavengers measurement (major) reactive species. A two-phase approach assess AOP concepts proposed, consisting (i) proof-of-concept (technology readiness levels (TRL) 1-3), followed (ii) intended water matrix cost comparison an established process, applying such as UV fluence or ozone consumption (TRL 3-5). Microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is susceptible to degradation by singlet oxygen (1O2) attack due multiple unsaturated olefinic bond sites. In this study, the Z-scheme heterojunction α-Fe2O3/tubular g-C3N4 with C defects (α-Fe2O3/TDCN) was synthesized via hydrothermal and cocalcination methods. The efficient generation of 1O2 realized enhancing photogenerated carrier separation adsorption capabilities used investigate process mechanism MC-LR. results show that rate MC-LR can reach nearly 100% within 60 min under visible light irradiation, α-Fe2O3/TDCN possesses good stability environmental friendliness. relationship between photocatalyst performance analyzed density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as hydroxyl radical (HO•)- and sulfate (SO4•–)-mediated oxidation, are attractive technologies used in water wastewater treatments. To evaluate the treatment efficiencies of AOPs, monitoring primary radicals (HO• SO4•–) well secondary generated from reaction HO•/SO4•– with matrices is necessary. Therefore, we developed a novel chemical probe method to examine five key simultaneously, including HO•, SO4•–, Cl•, Cl2•–, CO3•–. Five probes, nitrobenzene, para-chlorobenzoic acid, benzoic 2,4,6-trimethylbenzoic 2,4,6-trimethylphenol, were selected this study. Their bimolecular rate constants diverse first calibrated under same conditions minimize systematic errors. Three typical AOPs (UV/H2O2, UV/S2O82–, UV/HSO5–) tested obtain steady-state concentrations. The effects dissolved organic matter, Br–, concentration inspected. Our results suggest that five-probe can accurately measure HO•- SO4•–-mediated when Br– DOM less than 4.0 μM 15 mgC L–1, respectively. Overall, practical easily accessible determine multiple simultaneously.
