Neonicotinoid mixtures are common in streams worldwide, but corresponding ecological responses poorly understood. We combined experimental and observational studies to narrow this knowledge gap. The mesocosm experiment determined that concentrations of the neonicotinoids imidacloprid clothianidin (range exposures, 0 11.9 μg/liter) above hazard concentration for 5% species (0.017 0.010 μg/liter, respectively) caused a loss taxa abundance richness, disrupted adult emergence, altered trophodynamics, while two dose-dependent synergistic effects. In 85 Coastal California streams, were commonly detected [59% samples (n = 340), 72% streams], frequently occurred as (56% streams), potential toxicity was dominated by (maximum 1.92 2.51 μg/liter). Ecological field consistent with effects observed experiment, indicating neonicotinoid pose greater than expected risks stream health.

Anthropogenic alteration of physical habitat structure in streams and rivers is increasingly recognized as a major cause impairment worldwide. As part their assessment the status trends condition U.S., U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) quantify monitor channel size slope, substrate stability, instream complexity cover, riparian vegetation cover structure, anthropogenic disturbance activities, channel-riparian interaction. Like biological assemblages water chemistry, strongly controlled by natural geoclimatic factors that can obscure or amplify influence human activities. We developed systematic approach to estimate deviation observed river stream from expected least-disturbed reference conditions. applied this calculate indices three aspects conterminous (CONUS): streambed sediment complexity. The precision responsiveness these led USEPA use them evaluate CONUS streams. scores systematically decreased with greater at sites within ecoregions, which we interpret response influences. Although activities negatively influenced all most geomorphic were dominant For over full range disturbance, analyses observed/expected characteristics showed augmented flood flows basin agriculture be leading predictors instability excess fine sediments. Similarly, non-agricultural land uses reduced ecoregions. In turn, reductions complexity, combined summer low flows, simplification. conclude quantitative measures are useful important indicators impacts on condition.

Soil health is recognized as an important ecosystem property sensitive to human impact. As a concept, soil cannot be directly measured, and so assessment modeling efforts largely rely upon key biological, chemical, physical indicators. Efforts develop overall index are lacking due significant statistical challenges the necessity for regional calibration. Taken from field of educational research, structural equation (SEM) attractive approach enhance reliability validity scoring. Therefore, SEM may utilized advance research understand management practices impacts on health. Our objectives were robust scoring function that (i) captures concept latent variables, (ii) adjusts scores by inherent properties legacy intensive land use adequately reflect our conditions contemporary management, (iii) meets diverse practitioner needs. Through this process, we refined minimum dataset indicators reconceptualized into functional properties. results support development single level or multilevel model-depending practitioner's goals-that accounts repeated sampling pseudoreplication. While functions highly related conventional approach, outperformed methods in terms its wider distribution scores-and thus enhanced discriminatory power lower higher range scores. We also confirmed includes adjustments mineralogy successfully differentiates among use. have confidence tool reliable appropriate further examine more nuanced change within given across time space covering diversity soils. The impact of biochar application on crop yield has always been a topic concern. However, most current research focuses the short-term effects growth. Investigating long-term in increasing yields is crucial for food security and sustainable agricultural development. To address this issue, study performed coupling meta-analysis structural equation model (SEM) based establishment dataset containing 981 sets observations. results demonstrated that significantly durably boosted yield, also shown an average increase 36.2% SOC over monitoring period exceeding 2 years. Crop increased by 16% after scale, although varied across types, better corn wheat than paddy rice production. It noteworthy still 15% 6 years application. According to SEM, was positively correlated with amount biochar, higher under low nitrogen (N) input high N input. yield-increasing effect more attributable its enhancement rather soil bulk density pH.
