Heavy haze events occur frequently over northeast China during the winter, despite successful implementation of Clean Air Act, which primarily targets fossil fuel sources, in recent years. Agricultural fires have been suggested as one main causes these episodes. However, their regional contribution to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution has not systematically evaluated. In this study, we use GEOS-Chem model investigate role agricultural heavy episodes from December 2018 March 2019 Heilongjiang province. Our results show significant discrepancies between simulated and observed PM2.5 concentrations severe days. By increasing fire emissions GFED4s inventory by a factor ∼23, are able better replicate model, indicating under-representation inventory. Furthermore, baseline simulation overestimates black carbon organic ratio Harbin, suggesting biased emission specified assessment underscores that agriculture constitute cause extreme study period, strictly implemented ban would improve air quality with substantial health benefits.

The light-absorbing organic aerosol (OA) constitutes an important fraction of absorbing components, counteracting major cooling effect aerosols to climate. mechanisms in linking the complex and changeable chemistry OA with its properties remain be elucidated. Here, by using solvent extraction, ambient from urban environment was fractionated according polarity, which further nebulized online characterized compositions properties. Water extracted high-polar compounds a significantly higher oxygen carbon ratio (O/C) than methanol extracts. A transition O/C about 0.6 found, below above enhancement reduction absorptivity were observed increasing O/C, occurring on less polar high compounds, respectively. In particular, co-increase nitrogen elements suggests role nitrogen-containing functional groups enhancing (e.g., forming aromatics), while oxidation (O/C > 0.6) likely led fragmentation bleaching chromophores. results here may reconcile previous observations darkening or whitening chromophores brown carbon, parametrization has potential link changing polarity

Abstract Light-absorbing Brown Carbon (BrC) aerosols partially offset the overall climate-cooling of aerosols. However, evolution BrC light-absorption during atmospheric transport is poorly constrained. Here, we utilize optical properties, ageing-diagnostic δ 13 C-BrC and time to deduce that mass absorption cross-section (MAC WS-BrC ) decreasing by ~50% long-range oversea transport, resulting in a first-order bleaching rate 0.24 day ‒1 3-day transit from continental East Asia south-east Yellow Sea receptor. A modern 14 C signal points strong inverse correlation between age source material. Combining this with results for South reveals striking agreement these two major-emission regions rapid photobleaching higher intrinsic absorptivity stemming biomass burning. The consistency parameters constrained independently outflows both indicates weakening light absorption, thus primarily related photochemical processes rather than sources, likely ubiquitous phenomenon.
