The growing body of litigation alleging bodily injury from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure has put a spotlight on the available scientific literature regarding potential human health impacts, various data gaps within literature. This review assesses evolution epidemiological findings for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), PFAS compound. In 2012, C8 Science Panel published series reports determining "probable links" certain outcomes (including kidney cancer thyroid disease); it was first major research effort investigating adverse effects following to PFOA. At that time, there were only handful studies (i.e., studies). Now, over decade later, PFOA grown substantially. As is nature evolving science, additional spotlighted important improvements in classification, confounding control, statistical methods strengthen more recent investigations. grows evolves with improved methodology, original Panel's conclusions have not been supported by Within context general causation, while remain research, support no causal relationship between or disease.

The relationship between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure human health has received widespread attention. This review focuses on the key distinctions in PFAS occupational population general from different countries. A systematic summary is made external environment, pathways, internal levels, effects of population. manufacturing, use, disposal processes increase their concentration levels ambient leading to significantly higher concentrations than background areas. Different pathways may lead molecular initiating events outcomes Moreover, are nearly one hundred times those Mixed more unknown another important feature Although not associated with mortality, can disrupt metabolic cause adverse liver, kidney, lipid homeostasis. Therefore, stringent protections for necessary reduce risks.

Mass spectrometry (MS) has dramatically transformed environmental protection by facilitating the precise quantification and identification of pollutants. This review charts evolution chemistry, intertwining it with advancements in analytical chemistry MS technologies. It specifically focuses on role studying persistent organic pollutants like organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), brominated fire retardants (BFRs), perfluoroalkyl polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), marking significant milestones their implications. Notably, adoption gas chromatography 1970s liquid late 1990s profoundly expanded scientists' ability to detect complex pollutant mixtures. Over past 50 years, proliferation potential surged, necessitating more sophisticated analysis techniques, such as high-resolution mass spectrometry-nontargeted (HRMS-NTA) suspect screening. While HRMS promises enhance characterization new pollutants, a shift chemical management strategies remains imperative. Despite technological advances, alone is insufficient mitigate risks from continuous emergence novel chemicals, many potentially already present environment bioaccumulating humans.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are emerging water contaminants with significant environmental health impacts, posing challenges in treatment due to their high stability persistence. With increasing regulations, a critical need remains understanding the sustainability of PFAS technologies. Our review examines environmental, economic, social impacts current technologies across different types contexts. Additionally, we propose framework for future studies enable more holistic technology evaluations under specific conditions.
