Colloidal carbon dots (C-dots) have attracted a great deal of attention for their unique optical properties. However, it is still challenge to obtain highly purified C-dots without using multiple-step purification or postsize selection. In this work, self-precipitation hydrothermal reaction was used synthesize red-emitting (R-C-dots) o-phenylenediamine (o-PDA) as precursor any catalyst. The R-C-dots are able precipitate on the wall reactor, which enables us solid-state with high purity. photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) 36.75%, among highest PLQY values reported previously catalysts. transient PL and absorption spectra revealed that 5,14-dihydroquinoxalino[2,3-b]phenazine linked surface determined red luminescence behavior. This work provides new path controllable synthesis high-purity R-C-dots, showing potential applications in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract Carbon dots (CDs) are an emerging class of nanomaterials with attractive optical properties, which promise to enable a variety applications. An important and timely question is whether CDs can become functional sustainable alternative incumbent nanomaterials, notably inorganic quantum dots. Herein, the current CD literature comprehensively reviewed as regards their synthesis function, focus on sustainability aspects. The study quantifies why it that be synthesized biomass sole starting material free from toxic precious metals critical raw materials. It further describes analyzes employed pretreatment, chemical‐conversion, purification, processing procedures, highlights issues usage solvents, energy efficiency, safety waste management. specially shown many reported methods concerningly wasteful utilization non‐sustainable solvents energy. finally recommended future studies should explicitly consider discuss environmental influence selected material, generated byproducts, quantitative information required amounts consumables, provided evaluation presented in upscaled context.

Carbon dots (CDs) are nanostructures containing mainly carbon atoms and abundant functional groups. With remarkable adjustable physicochemical properties, CDs have excellent hydrophilicity, photoluminescence (PL), biocompatibility, low toxicity. Although the numerous advantages make a research target for synthesizing advanced materials, some limitations pertinent must be corrected. Rare earth elements (RE) candidates doping CDs, obtaining hybrid materials called RE-CDs to optimize luminescence applicability, quantum yields. Hybrids allow combination of advantageous characteristics both RE, drastically improving their luminous magneto-optical imaging performance opening door practical technological applications. To date, no studies in literature provided in-depth analyses methods used prepare RE-CDs, characterization techniques used, challenges, critical analysis what could improved synthesis by proposing solutions. fill this gap, review initially presents detailed survey RE separately. Subsequently, addressed, as well obtainment, commonly characterizations, recent applications, from analyte detection functionality medical nanodevices.
