Large-scale marine heatwaves in the Northeast Pacific (NEP), identified here and previously as 'warm blobs', have devastating impacts on regional ecosystems. An anomalous atmospheric ridge over NEP is known to be crucial for maintaining these warm blobs, also causing abnormally cold temperatures North America during season. Previous studies linked this teleconnections from tropical sea surface temperature anomalies. However, it was unclear whether extratropics could contribute ridge. Here we show that planetary wave trains, triggered by increased rainfall latent heat release Mediterranean Sea accompanied decreased Atlantic, can transport energy NEP, guided westerly jet, induce a quasi-barotropic there. Our findings provide insights into extratropical sustaining ridge, offering source of potential predictability blobs fluctuations America.

Abstract The PM 2.5 (fine particulate matter with diameter ≤2.5 μm) concentration anomalies over the North China Plain (NCP) in early and late winter sometimes show a subseasonal reversal, which brings great challenge for precise control of air pollution, mechanisms are not well understood. This paper reveals key role Barents Sea sea‐ice this reversal. In winter, negative Scandinavian‐like pattern causes an anticyclonic anomaly Northeast Asia thus leads to positive NCP. addition, anomalous warm advection associated Atlantic Oscillation‐like accelerates loss Sea, especially increases surface turbulent heating flux. Abstract PM 2.5 pollution frequently occurs over the North China Plain (NCP) during early winter, which is usually modulated by northeast Asian anomalous anticyclone (NAAA). Research into NAAA and related has mainly focused on individual impact of El Niño or Arctic sea ice, with less analysis their synergistic effect. This study finds that October Barents–Kara Seas ice winter synergistically exert distinct remote influence via propagation Rossby waves finally deteriorate air quality NCP. More specifically, more Barents‐Kara in tends to cause a cooling there November, stimulates wave train thus strengthens NAAA. This paper reviews recent advances in understanding the interaction between East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The achievements are summarized into two aspects: 1) impacts of ENSO on EAWM, 2) effects EAWM ENSO. For first aspect, results show that: current climate model simulations have a common weaker bias than observations; influence central Pacific type is generally that eastern ENSO; precipitation anomalies tropical Indian Ocean tend to contribute intra-seasonal transition teleconnection over Asia; ENSO-EAWM relationship unstable subject non-linear modulation by state oceans extratropical atmospheric phenomena, which include Decadal Arctic Oscillation. Regarding second studies shown “pure” (denoted as res ), independent signal, can lead significant variations convection western Pacific, local Hadley circulation Asia, Walker equatorial latitudes; CMIP6 models preproduce above well, although with some bias. changes zonal flow associated modulating effect North America. Heatwaves interact with various extreme weather events, amplifying their impacts beyond the risks associated high temperatures alone. However, previous research has often overlooked extent to which heatwaves influence regions origin. In this study, we introduce a classification of in Northeast Asia, distinguishing between long-lived (LHWs) lasting five days or more and short-lived (SHWs) less than days. The study highlights significant role LHWs triggering heavy precipitation South China. anticyclonic anomalies are influenced by slow-moving wave train, initiating sustaining cyclonic over China, resulting upward airflow anomalies. High air pollutions of PM 2.5 concentrations have become a serious environmental problem in China during recent decades, causing significant influences on urban quality and human health.
