The
dichotomy
between
high
microbial
abundance
(HMA)
and
low
(LMA)
sponges
has
been
long
recognized.
In
the
present
study,
56
sponge
species
from
three
geographic
regions
(greater
Caribbean,
Mediterranean,
Red
Sea)
were
investigated
by
transmission
electron
microscopy
for
presence
of
microorganisms
in
mesohyl
matrix.
Additionally,
bacterial
enumeration
DAPI-counting
was
performed
on
a
subset
samples.
Of
investigated,
28
identified
as
belonging
to
HMA
LMA
category.
orders
Agelasida
Verongida
consisted
exclusively
species,
Poecilosclerida
composed
only
sponges.
Other
taxa
contained
both
types
associations
(e.g.,
marine
Haplosclerida,
Homoscleromorpha,
Dictyoceratida),
clear
phylogenetic
pattern
could
not
be
identified.
For
few
an
intermediate
load
determined,
data
did
suffice
reliably
determine
or
status.
To
experimentally
status
we
therefore
recommend
combination
16S
rRNA
gene
sequence
data.
This
study
significantly
expands
previous
reports
abundances
tissues
contributes
better
understanding
HMA-LMA
sponge-microbe
symbioses.

Developmental
biology
is
among
the
many
subdisciplines
of
life
sciences
being
transformed
by
our
increasing
awareness

microbial
symbionts
in
health
and
disease.
Most
symbioses
are
horizontally
acquired,
i.e.,
they
begin
anew
each
generation.
In
such
associations,
embryonic
period
prepares
animal
to
engage
with
partner(s)
fidelity
following
birth
or
hatching.
Once
interactions
underway,
partners
drive
maturation
tissues
that
either
directly
associated
distant
from
symbiont
populations.
Animal
alliances
often
involve
complex
communities,
as
those
vertebrate
gastrointestinal
tract.
A
series
simpler-model
systems
providing
insight
into
basic
rules
principles
govern
establishment
maintenance
stable
animal-microbe
partnerships.
This
review
focuses
on
what
biologists
have
learned
about
developmental
trajectory
acquired
through
study
binary
squid-vibrio
model.

Transmission

Moeller
et
al.
derived
inbred
mouse
lines
two
wild
populations
mice
with
distinct
and
monitored
populations'
microbiomes
for

years
while
they
were
kept
in
same
animal
facility.
The
lineages
remained

after
10
generations.
