Self-propelling active matter relies on the conversion of energy from undirected, nanoscopic scale to directed, macroscopic motion. One challenges in design synthetic lies control dynamic states, or motility gaits. Here, an experimental system self-propelling droplets with thermally controllable and reversible states is presented, unsteady over meandering persistent arrested These are known depend Péclet number molecular process powering motion, which can now be tuned by using a temperature sensitive mixture surfactants as propulsion fuel. Abstract Unravelling the rules of molecular motion is a contemporary challenge that promises to support development responsive materials and likely enhance understanding functional motion. Advances in integrating light‐driven motors soft matter have led design realization chiral nematic (cholesteric) liquid crystals can respond light with modification their helical pitch, also helix inversion. Under illumination, these convert from one geometry another. Here, series feature rich configurational landscape presented, specifically which involves three stable states. The succession structures involved motor cycle transmitted at higher structural levels, as cholesteric are formed interconvert between helices opposite handedness, reversibly. Helical swimming is a ubiquitous strategy for motile cells to generate self-gradients environmental sensing. The model biflagellate Chlamydomonas reinhardtii rotates at constant 1–2 Hz as it swims, but the mechanism unclear. Here, we show unequivocally that rolling motion derives from persistent, nonplanar flagellar beat pattern. This revealed by high-speed imaging and micromanipulation of live cells. We construct fully 3D relate beating directly free-swimming trajectories. For realistic geometries, reproduces both sense magnitude axial rotation helical requires further symmetry breaking between two flagella. Light carries energy and momentum. It can therefore alter the motion of objects on atomic to astronomical scales. Being widely available, readily controllable, broadly biocompatible, light is also an ideal tool propel microscopic particles, drive them out thermodynamic equilibrium, make active. Thus, light-driven particles have become a recent focus research in field soft active matter. In this Perspective, we discuss advances control matter with light, which has mainly been achieved using intensity. We highlight some first attempts utilize light's additional properties, such as its wavelength, polarization, then argue that fully exploiting all properties will play critical role increasing level over actuation well flow itself through it. This enabling step advance design systems, their functionalities, transfer toward technological applications.

Abstract There are increasing efforts to engineer functional compartments that mimic cellular behaviours from the bottom-up. One behaviour is receiving particular attention motility, due its biotechnological potential and ubiquity in living systems. Many existing platforms make use of Marangoni effect achieve motion water/oil (w/o) droplet However, most these systems unsuitable for biological applications biocompatibility issues caused by presence oil phases. Here we report a biocompatible all aqueous (w/w) PEG/dextran Pickering-like emulsion system consisting liposome-stabilised cell-sized droplets, where stability can be easily tuned adjusting liposome composition concentration. We demonstrate capable negative chemotaxis: droplets respond polymer gradient through directional down gradient. The biocompatibility, motility partitioning abilities this offers new directions pursue research motion-related processes.

Unlike molecular crystals, soft self-assembled fibers, micelles, vesicles, etc., exhibit a certain order in the arrangement of their constitutive monomers but also high structural dynamicity and variability. Defects disordered local domains that continuously form-and-repair structures impart to such materials unique adaptive dynamical properties, which make them, e.g., capable communicate with each other. However, objective criteria compare complex features classify supramolecular are non-trivial attain. Here we show data-driven workflow allowing us achieve this goal. Building on unsupervised clustering Smooth Overlap Atomic Position (SOAP) data obtained from equilibrium dynamics simulations, can variety assemblies via robust SOAP metric. Abstract Self-reproducing molecules abound in nature where they support growth and motion of living systems. In artificial settings, chemical reactions can also show complex kinetics reproduction, however integrating self-reproducing into larger systems remains a challenge towards achieving higher order functionality. Here, we that lipids initiate, sustain accelerate the movement octanol droplets water. Reciprocally, chemotactic increases rate lipid reproduction substantially. Reciprocal coupling between bond-forming chemistry droplet motility is thus established as an effect interplay molecular-scale events (the self-reproduction molecules) microscopic droplets). This molecular offers alternative means performing work catalysis micro-heterogeneous environments.
