Abstract Climate change will push the planet worryingly close to its boundaries, across all latitudes and levels of development. One question therefore is extent which climate does (and will) severely affect societies’ livelihoods, health, well-being, cultures. This paper discusses “severe risks” concept developed under Working Group II’s contribution Fifth Sixth Assessment Reports Intergovernmental Panel on Change (IPCC, AR5, AR6). Focusing low-lying coastal socio-ecological systems (LCS) acknowledging that attempts define “severe” risk have been problematic at level global syntheses, we argue for a more place- people-based framing relating “habitability changing climate.” We summarize habitability in terms five pillars: land, freshwater, food, settlement infrastructure, economic subsistence activities; acknowledge social cultural factors (including perceptions, values, governance arrangements, human agency, power structures) as critical underlying rather than separate pillars. further develop examine future health three “hotspot” archetypes (arctic coasts, atoll islands, densely populated urban areas). Building IPCC AR6 severe risks, discuss key parameters describing risks LCS: point irreversibility changes, physical thresholds , cascading effects various dimensions. also highlight variability conditions both between within each them. Further work should consist refining case study find right balance capturing context-specificities through real-world local studies commonalities derived from generic archetypes. In addition, there need identify appropriate methods assess thus habitability.

The planned relocation of communities away from areas climate-related risk has emerged as a critical strategy to adapt the impacts climate change. Empirical examples around world show, however, that such relocations often lead poor outcomes for affected communities. To address this challenge, and contribute developing guidelines just sustainable processes, paper calls attention three fundamental tensions in processes: (1) conceptualizations habitability; (2) community consultation ownership; (3) siloed policy frameworks funding mechanisms. Drawing on collective experience 29 researchers, policymakers practitioners working context changing climate, we provide strategies collectively collaboratively acknowledging navigating these among actors at all levels, foster more equitable processes outcomes.

Abstract In agri‐environmental decision‐making, data are essential to defining problems and informing solutions. Nevertheless, it is important consider not only how can be used but also what does in contexts. We argue that the liveliness of relations explored by attending their infrastructural, performative feral qualities. Taking digital agriculture climate change adaptation as examples, we these interconnected theses could applied. This critical approach generative effects will help avoid unintended consequences shape alternative futures.

Climate change is a global phenomenon having wide-ranging social, economic, ecological, and environmental sustainability implications. This study assesses climate awareness, understanding, causes, mitigation measures, practices among residents of the Kathmandu Valley through mixed-method approach. Quantitative surveys with 433 respondents four Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) are conducted diverse demographics. Descriptive statistics used to summarize quantitative data, chi-square (χ2) test measure associations between various The analysis shows that frequently link extreme weather events, particularly flooding, severe hot cold waves, changes in rain precipitation patterns. Furthermore, identify deforestation, industrialization, fossil fuels as primary strategies such afforestation, recycling waste, use renewable energies for long-term sustainability. In the field of climate change adaptation, future matters. River futures influence way adaptation projects are implemented in rivers. this paper, we challenge ways which dominant paradigms and expert claims monopolise truth concerning policies designs river futures, thereby sidelining delegitimising alternative futures. So far, limited work has been performed on power context adaptation. We conceptualised through imaginaries, i.e., collectively publicly envisioned reproductions riverine socionatures mobilised social life order. Using Border Meuse project as a case study, stretch south Netherlands, proclaimed success story Dutch water management, elucidated how three imaginaries (a modern imaginary, market-driven an eco-centric imaginary) merged into eco-modern imaginary. Importantly, not only did merge, but their aligned regimes also merged. Thus, argue that George Orwell’s famous quote, “who controls past, future: who present, past” can be extended to future, see act rediscover past”.

The growing scale and intensity of climate change poses a substantial challenge to the status quo society politics. Adapting risks associated with extreme weather events changing climatic conditions will require re-imagination many aspects politics society. Therefore, can be framed as problem imagination; one in which our relationship future is central understanding how possibilities present are perceived. This research analyses public submissions made on New Zealand's first draft National Adaptation Plan understand adaptation imagined by different groups. In analysing we identify describe four thematic 'adaptive futures' that each argue for varied amounts socio-political from quo: data driven resilience; growth opportunity; nature-society change; flaxroots transformation. Underpinning these adaptive futures emerging advocacy coalitions seek shape what seen possible, imaginatively, politically materially. Our analysis also highlights opportunities perceived whom, insights into attempts delineate boundaries imagination political possibility.
