Abstract Anxiety-associated symptoms following acute stress usually become extinct gradually within a period of time. However, the mechanisms underlying how individuals cope with to achieve extinction anxiety are not clear. Whereas humans exhibit emergency responses to assist unconscious individuals, how nonhuman animals react unresponsive conspecifics is less well understood. In our daily life, we are exposed to uncontrollable and stressful events that disrupt sleep. However, the underlying neural mechanisms deteriorating quality of non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMs) REM largely unknown.
