Vinegar flies (Diptera: Drosophilidae) are well known to be associated with yeasts, which provide important nutrients and emit attractive semiochemicals. Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) has become a major pest of berries cherries around the world, requiring intensive management maintain fruit quality. Although insecticides remain dominant control approach, disruption fly-yeast-host interactions remains promising avenue for reducing economic impact this pest. We conducted field laboratory experiments explore whether crop sterilant (peroxyacetic acid hydrogen peroxide) developed disease can affect D. suzukii. In 2 yr tests in highbush blueberries, we found significantly lower infestation by plots treated sterilant, both alone rotation program zeta-cypermethrin. Abstract The invasive pest fruit fly Drosophila suzukii is thought to be a specialist on healthy, i.e. unwounded, non-fermenting fruits. Morphological (sharp ovipositor) and neurophysiological/behavioural adaptations have been suggested contribute distinct adult feeding (wounded/microbe-laden fruits) reproductive (healthy sites. We tested whether (1) variation in the overall availability of fruits, (2) type (healthy, wounded, fermenting), (3) relative abundance different types are ecological determinants D. egg-laying decisions. Even though individual flies reduced their output when resource (blueberries) was low, significantly higher proportion eggs allocated healthy wounded fermenting However, preference for over fruits declined continuously with decrease did not change. Under laboratory conditions, larvae achieved developmental success than blueberries, but suffered less from density-dependent competition These data suggest that , despite showing an also uses wounded/fermenting as sites, it may thrive well windfall

Following the concept of holobiont, insect-microbiota interactions play an important role in insect biology. Many examples host-associated microorganisms have been reported to drastically influence biological processes such as development, physiology, nutrition, survival, immunity, or even vector competence. While a huge number studies on insect-associated microbiota focused bacteria, other microbial partners including fungi comparatively neglected. Yeasts, which establish mostly commensal symbiotic relationships with their host, can dominate mycobiota certain insects. This review presents key advances and progress research field highlighting diversity yeast communities associated insects, well impact life-history traits, behavior.

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) or spotted wing is a worldwide invasive pest of soft- and stone-fruit production. Female D. lay their eggs in ripening fruit the hatched larvae damage from inside, rendering it unmarketable causing significant economic loss. Current methods to reduce population field primarily rely on chemical insecticides which are not sustainable long-term solution increase risk resistance developing. Several studies demonstrate that when encounter coexist with other food source, this usually disadvantage suzukii, leading reduced oviposition increased larval mortality. These effects have potential be exploited management perspective. In review we summarise recent research articles focusing interspecific interactions between species aimed at understanding how drives behaviour. Abstract Yeasts play an important role in the life cycle and biology of insect pest Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), commonly known as spotted wing drosophila (SWD). Adult larvae this species are to feed benefit from yeast their diet. In addition, yeasts were found be attractive SWD repeatedly associated with SWD. Among those, Hanseniaspora uvarum is most mentioned. The present study explores chemical composition effects three H. strains five ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida sp., Issatchenkia terricola, Metschnikowia pulcherrima Saccharomycopsis vini ) diet adults. different used influenced mortality, fecundity ingestion by females. S. preferably ingested increased intra- extracellular concentrations compounds, such amino acids, carbohydrates, sugar alcohols organic produced or consumed differed among species. Knowledge interaction specific differences profile compounds can help improve development control strategies against promoting attract-and-kill formulations based on combinations appropriate insecticide.

Understanding the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of host-microbiota associations notably involves exploring how members microbiota assemble whether they are transmitted along host generations. Here, we investigate larval acquisition facultative bacterial yeast symbionts Drosophila melanogaster suzukii in ecologically realistic setups. Fly mothers fruit were major sources symbionts. Microorganisms associated with adult males also contributed to microbiota, mostly D. melanogaster. Yeasts acquired at stage maintained through metamorphosis, life, offspring. All these observations varied widely among microbial strains, suggesting have different transmission strategies fruits insects. Our approach shows insects can be from a diversity highlights compound nature microbiotas.
