Diets and parasites influence the gut bacterial symbionts of bumble bees, but potential interactive effects remain overlooked. The main objective this study was to assess isolated sunflower pollen, its phenolamides, widespread trypanosomatid Crithidia sp. on Bombus terrestris males.Bumble bee males emerged in microcolonies fed either (i) willow pollen (control), (ii) or (iii) spiked with phenolamide extracts from pollen. These were infected by pathogen-free. Using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing (V3-V4 region), we observed a significant alteration beta diversity not alpha microbial communities compared control Similarly, infection parasite altered males, irrespective diet. By contrast, did observe any phenolamide-enriched Changes indicate dissimilarities taxa between treatment groups, while lack difference demonstrates no changes within each group.Bumble bees harbour consistent microbiota worldwide, our results suggest that are somewhat shaped their diets as well interaction these two factors. This confirms suitable biological surrogates effect diet infections communities.

Social bees are an important model for the ecology and evolution of gut microbiomes. These harbor ancient, specific, beneficial microbiomes crucial pollinators. However, most research has concentrated on managed honeybees bumblebees in temperate zone. Here we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize wild neotropical bumblebee communities from Colombia. We also analyzed drivers microbiome structure across our data previously published bumblebees. Our results show that lineages not only retained their ancient bacterial symbionts during dispersal North America but prone major disruption, a shift is strongly associated with parasite infection. Finally, found much more structured by host phylogeny than geography, despite very different environmental conditions plant two regions.

ABSTRACT Bumble bees are key pollinators for natural and agricultural plant communities. Their health performance supported by a core gut microbiota composed of few bacterial taxa. However, the taxonomic composition community structure bumble bee microbiotas can vary with species, environment, origin (i.e., whether colonies come from wild or commercial rearing facility), it is unclear metabolic capabilities therefore as well. Here we used metagenomic sequencing to examine composition, structure, potential across two different Bombus impatiens suppliers, B. , three other species sampled sites within native range all four species. We found that varied between populations origins suppliers. Notably, Apibacter consistently present in some species—suggesting may be previously unrecognized phylotype bees—and lack phylotypes populations. despite variation high-level was largely consistent hosts, including related host performance, though activity remains investigated. IMPORTANCE Our study first compare genome-level whole suppliers In addition, profiled full time. Overall, our results provide new insight into function will help researchers evaluate how well studies conducted one population translate Research on increasing relevance continue discover ways social influence health, decline abundance.

Abstract Bumblebees are key pollinators with gut microbiotas that support host health. After bumblebee queens undergo winter diapause, which occurs before spring colony establishment, their disturbed, but little is known about community dynamics during diapause itself. Queen also help seed worker microbiotas, so it important they recover post‐diapause to a typical structure, process may be impeded by pesticide exposure. We examined how queen microbiota structure and metabolic potential shift after whether recovery affected To do so, we placed commercial Bombus impatiens into euthanizing them at 0, 2 4 months of diapause. Additionally, allowed some from for 1 week euthanasia, exposing half the common herbicide glyphosate. Using whole‐community, shotgun metagenomic sequencing, found core bee phylotypes dominated before, two phylotypes, Schmidhempelia Snodgrassella , ceased detected late recovery. Despite fluctuations in taxonomic remained constant through Also, glyphosate exposure did not affect However, assembly quality our ability detect microbial taxa pathways declined alongside abundance, was substantially reduced Our study offers new insights change taxonomically functionally life stage provides guidance future studies diapausing bumblebees.

Many pollinators, including bumble bees, are in decline. Such declines known to be driven by a number of interacting factors. Decreases bee populations may also negatively impact the key ecosystem service, pollination, that they provide. Pesticides and parasites often cited as two drivers declines, particularly have previously been found interact with one another detriment health. Here we test effects an insecticide, sulfoxaflor, highly prevalent parasite, Crithidia bombi, on Bombus terrestris. After exposing colonies realistic doses either sulfoxaflor and/or bombi fully crossed experiment, were allowed forage field beans outdoor exclusion cages. Foraging performance was monitored, impacts fruit set recorded. We no effect stressor, or their interaction, pollination services provide beans, at individual level whole colony level. Further, there any treatment, metric, development. Our results contrast prior findings similar insecticides (neonicotinoids) services, development, potentially suggesting is less harmful compound health than neonicotinoids insecticides.

Abstract The microbiome is increasingly recognized for its complex relationship with host fitness. Bumblebees are to a characteristic gut community that derived and reinforced through social contact between individuals. bumblebee species-poor, primarily composed from small number of core taxa associated the greater tribe corbiculate bees. Experimental findings support role in resistance severe infections by common trypanosomal parasite, Crithidia bombi . We used 16S amplicon sequencing produce profiles, qPCR screen samples breadth our dataset has enabled us test seasonal interspecific trends community.
