Numerous academics and pundits contend that social media use is the primary cause of an international youth mental health crisis. However, these claims often rely on correlational evidence, ignoring confounding effects genetic, developmental, environmental, social, psychological factors influence health. This oversimplifies complex etiology problems. We call for a more nuanced understanding role in avoids oversimplification. Additionally, we urge researchers to move beyond vague, narrative-driven verbal theories encode them into precise, testable causal models. Using simulation techniques specification curve analyses, show how miss-specified models ignore can lead biased conclusions about media's adverse effects. simplistic focus diverts attention from broader contributing problems, hindering development effective interventions support.

Abstract Mental health is shaped by socio-environmental determinants, yet traditional research approaches struggle to capture their complex interactions. This review explores the potential of generative agents, powered large language models, simulate human-like behaviour in virtual environments for mental research. We outline applications including modelling adverse life events, urbanicity, climate change, discuss challenges and describe how agents could transform

Abstract Public disclosures of mental health problems on social media represent a potentially powerful informal avenue for increasing literacy and reducing public stigma in relation to people with problems. We investigated whether the audience reported any reduction their own toward after exposure disclosures. also examined self-reported was associated characteristics members, disclosers disclosure messages. used Prolific obtain convenience sample (N = 803) adults who had been exposed disclosure. administered an online survey participants conducted series logistic regressions identify associations between disclosure-related reduction. Our findings showed that certain aspects messaging process appeared be These included explicit diagnoses from disclosers, particular message themes such as psychosocial causes ill health, positive echoing comments other users. In addition, members greater levels empathy toward, perceived similarity identification tended report reduced stigma. contribute evidence base underpinning how, when which have potential They can further help inform future promotion practices aiming mitigate health-related at population level. Background There is a need to go beyond mere measures of time used on social media. Existing tools inadequately capture the multidimensional nature media use, leaving gap for concise yet comprehensive assessment tools. Aims This study aimed develop short questionnaire addressing three critical dimensions use: self-presentation, negative experiences, and problematic use. The association between these symptoms anxiety depression was also investigated. Methods uses two independent datasets adolescents aged 16+ years in Norway. Using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) analyses, pool 31 items analyzed investigate factor structure associations with depression. For model development, “LifeOnSoMe”-study employed (>3,500 participants), data from pilot (~500 participants) external validation. Results Based ACO-analyses, 20-item six-factor identified, encompassing comparison self-presentation (five items), each following domains: experiences (Negative acts Unwanted attention others) use (Subjective overuse, Social obligations, Source concern). Confirmatory analyses demonstrated very good excellent fit both datasets, consistent six different domains Discussion suggested provides robust succinct tool evaluating media’s impact mental health, offering substantial explanatory power variance symptoms. can serve as meaningful assessing potential health related outcomes.

Introduction Screen use in bed has become a widespread habit, particularly among young people. This behavior been associated with poor sleep, some studies indicating that social media may be especially detrimental. However, there is scarcity of research directly comparing the relationship between various screen activities and most existing focus on adolescents rather than adults. study aims to explore sleep students, specifically other screen-based activities. Methods utilized data from cross-sectional Students’ Health Wellbeing Study 2022 included n=45,202 participants aged 18-28 years. Regression analyses were used assess time Results A one-hour increase after going was 59% higher odds having symptoms insomnia reduction duration 24 minutes. The associations outcomes did not differ for versus Independent time, who exclusively had lower longer compared those engaging or mix Discussion present found increased linked poorer across activity type. Future should refine classifications, specific content, employ experimental approaches determine causal mechanisms.
