The natural conservation of coastal lagoons is important not only for their ecological importance, but also because the valuable ecosystem services they provide human welfare and wellbeing. Coastal are shallow semi-enclosed systems that support habitats such as wetlands, mangroves, salt-marshes seagrass meadows, well a rich biodiversity. complex social-ecological with livelihoods, wellbeing to humans. This study assessed, quantified valued 32 lagoons. main findings are: (i) definitions still generally accepted; (ii) quantification made in many different ways, using units; (iii) evaluation monetary terms some service problematic, often relying on non-monetary methods; (iv) when terms, this may represent very benefits; and, (v) aspects climate change, including increasing temperature, sea-level rise changes rainfall patterns threaten

Abstract Low‐elevation coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to seawater flooding as sea levels rise and the frequency intensity of large storms increase with climate change. Seawater can lead salinization fresh aquifers by vertical saltwater intrusion (SWI). Vertical SWI is often overlooked in zone threat assessments despite risk it poses critical freshwater resources salt‐intolerant ecosystems that sustain populations. This review synthesizes field modeling approaches for investigating practical theoretical understanding flushing processes obtained from prior studies. The synthesis explores complex dynamics influenced density‐dependent flow oceanic, hydrologic, geologic, climatic, anthropogenic forcings acting on across spatial temporal scales. Key knowledge gaps, management challenges, research opportunities identified help advance our vulnerability groundwater. Past studies focus idealized aquifer systems, thus future work could consider more diverse topographic environments. Concurrent programs should be sustained over time capture interactions between physical processes, repeated events, delayed responses. Finally, this highlights need improved coordination translation disciplines (e.g., engineering, hydrogeology, oceanography, social science) gain a holistic SWI. There also needs education communities, policy makers, managers motivate societal action address groundwater changing climate.

Mediterranean ecosystems support important processes and functions that bring direct benefits to human society. Yet, marine ecosystem services are usually overlooked due the challenges in identifying quantifying them. This paper proposes application of several biophysical modelling approaches assess spatially temporally sustainable use supply selected services. Such include food provision, water purification, coastal protection, lifecycle maintenance recreation, focusing on region. Overall, our study found a higher number decreasing than increasing trends natural capacity provide services, while contrast opposite was observed be true for realised flow humans. paves way towards an effective Blue Growth European maritime policies, although little attention is paid quantification this context. We identify key challenge integrating socio-economic models as necessary step further research.

Abstract In recent decades, great research efforts have been made to understand how specific anthropogenic drivers impact coastal marine ecosystems and their services. Nevertheless, we still lack a synthesis of the existing knowledge on single multiple impacts systems, which is necessary guide future work. The objective this paper assess current interactions ecosystem services, with emphasis abiotic as dissolved nutrients (eutrophication or de‐eutrophication), temperature (warming), pH (acidification) oxygen (hypoxia). We performed systematic review literature consisting 164 papers using PRISMA method (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews Meta‐Analyses). only include English‐written papers, exclude non‐English avoid potential errors in representing interpreting scientific information due language limitations among authors. results show that service has largely focused drivers, while driver assessments are less common. Assessments partially integrate complexity, but they do not consider (1) relations feedbacks between drivers; 2() social processes dynamics; (3) temporal spatial scales. Synthesis applications . reviewed human affect found understanding combined effects different considering various time space scales pending issue. Ignoring limits our reality, high levels uncertainty. This affects policies actions, rely uncertain information. Thus, incomplete leads poor management To improve this, propose framework better factors.

Abstract Worldwide, humans are facing high risks from natural hazards, especially in coastal regions with population densities. Rising sea levels due to global warming making communities' infrastructure vulnerable disasters. The present study aims provide a coupling approach of vulnerability and resilience through restoration conservation lost or degraded habitats reclamation under different climate change scenarios. integrated valuation ecosystems tradeoffs model is used assess the current future communities. employed based on seven biogeophysical variables calculate hazard index highlight criticality habitats. results show that roughly 25% coastline more than 5 million residents highly areas mainland China, these numbers expected double by 2100. Abstract Ria de Aveiro is a mesotidal coastal lagoon with one of the largest continuous salt marshes in Europe. The objective this work was to assess C, N and P stocks Spartina maritima (low marsh pioneer halophyte) Juncus maritimus (representative mid-high halophytes) combined contribution Halimione portulacoides, Sarcocornia perennis , Bolbochenous ≈4400 ha area. A multivariate analysis (PCO), taking into account environmental variables annual biomass nutrient dynamics, showed that there are no clear seasonal or spatial differences within low marshes, but clearly separates J. Global initiatives have been increasingly focusing on mainstreaming the values of biodiversity and ecosystem services into decision-making at all levels.
