AbstractEleven healthy males were studied twice. On one occasion (control, C), they slept (night 1) and then underwent a battery of tests at 4h intervals from 06: 00 day 1 to 02: 2; then, after normal sleep 2), tested 10: 22: on 2. the second (sleep deprivation, SD), subjects remained awake during night 1. Each consisted measurements tympanic membrane temperature, profile mood states (POMS), muscle strength, self-chosen work rate (SCWR), perceived exertion, heart (HR) while exercising stationary cycle ergometer. Subjects also kept diary their activities two days answered questionnaire about habitual physical activity. Results showed significant negative effect deprivation most 1, but no other variables. Preservative procedures are described for the extraction and quantification of melatonin in cell material from dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra, an organism which this indoleamine is rapidly degraded due to interaction with free oxygen radicals photooxidation. Cells were shock-frozen liquid nitrogen pulverized. Various methods applied powder, rates recovery compared. For determination by high performance chromatography (HPLC), extractions acetone or perchloric acid more suitable than use other solvents. purposes radioimmunoassay (RIA), gave best results. Several inorganic solvents, often research, such as chloroform, dichloromethane, diethyl ether, led considerable losses indoleamine. The developed HPLC either electrochemical fluorescence detection also allow indolic compounds, particular, tryptophan 5-methoxytryptamine. may be value further search related indoleamines non-vertebrate material, especially, unicells, multicellular plants, invertebrates.

Ten nurses have been studied for a period of about ten days during which they had rest and between two seven successive night shifts.
