Natural products from plants, animals, microbes, and minerals have long been a traditional source for the treatment of human diseases. In past decades, research on natural pharmaceutical industry had declined due to numerous challenges. However, recent developments in analytical technology, spectroscopy, high-throughput screening tremendously revived product drug discovery, including contribution marine-based drugs. The marine environment is unique resource enclosing massive biological diversity, which if genuinely explored might potentially lead breakthrough therapies. A growing number compounds sources are entering clinical trials thus, impact this field increasing. This review summarizes progress as therapeutic agents based an analysis patents published period January 2015 through June 2018.Marine organisms excellent producers chemicals with diverse structures pharmacological activities. Cumulative increase last few years clearly justifies importance these new study. Despite critical supply challenges, marine-derived actives being anticancer, antimicrobial, antiviral anti-inflammatory drugs treatments several other conditions.

Neuroinflammation is one of the main contributors to onset and progression neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Parkinson’s diseases. Microglial astrocyte activation a brain defense mechanism counteract harmful pathogens damaged tissues, while their prolonged induces neuroinflammation that can trigger or exacerbate neurodegeneration. Unfortunately, date there are no pharmacological therapies able slow down stop For this reason, research turning identification natural compounds with protective action against these Considering important role in development pathologies, anti-inflammatory activity could be good candidates for developing effective therapeutic strategies. Marine organisms represent huge source compounds, among them, algae appreciated sources bioactive components antioxidants, proteins, vitamins, minerals, soluble dietary fibers, polyunsaturated fatty acids, polysaccharides, sterols, carotenoids, tocopherols, terpenes, phycobilins, phycocolloids, phycocyanins. Recently, numerous have been isolated from marine potential efficacy neuroinflammation. This review highlights key inflammatory processes involved neurodegeneration specific CNS.

The search for novel biologically active molecules has extended to the screening of organisms associated with less explored environments. In this sense, Oceans, which cover nearly 67% globe, are interesting ecosystems characterized by a high biodiversity that is worth being explored. As such, marine microorganisms highly as promising sources new bioactive compounds potential value humans. Some these able survive in extreme environments and, result, they produce complex unique biological properties wide variety industrial and biotechnological applications. Thus, different (fungi, myxomycetes, bacteria, microalgae) producing antioxidant, antibacterial, apoptotic, antitumoral antiviral activities have been already isolated. This review compiles discusses discovery from reported 2018 onwards. Moreover, it highlights huge obtaining valuable compounds.

Marine natural products have proven, over the last half‐century, to be effective biological modulators. These molecules revealed new targets for cancer therapy as well dissimilar modes of action within typical classes drugs. In this scenario, innovation from marine‐based pharmaceuticals has helped advance chemotherapy in many aspects, most these are designated first‐in‐class Here, by examining path discovery development clinically approved drugs marine origin treatment—cytarabine (Cytosar‐U®), trabectedin (Yondelis®), eribulin (Halaven®), brentuximab vedotin (Adcetris®), and plitidepsin (Aplidin®)— together with those late clinical trial phases—lurbinectedin, plinabulin, marizomib, plocabulin—the present review offers a critical analysis contributions given compounds pharmacotherapy.
