Summary Science, as both a body of knowledge and process acquiring new knowledge, is widely regarded playing central role in biodiversity conservation. Science undoubtedly enhances our understanding the drivers loss assists formulation practical policy responses, but it has not yet proved sufficiently influential to reverse global trends decline. This review seeks critically examine science conservation identify any hidden assumptions that, once interrogated explored, may assist improving science, practice. By drawing on existing reviews literature, this describes major themes literature examines historical shifts framing It highlights dominance research philosophies that view through primarily ecological lens, changes goal(s) lack clarity over role(s) Finally, offers simple framework more clearly consistently conceptualize future. Greater critical reflection how might better accommodate multiple knowledges, goals values could ‘opening up’ new, legitimate pathways for

Visualisations are powerful communication tools that have the potential to help societies assess and manage natural hazard disaster risks. However, diversity of risk management contexts user characteristics is a challenge develop understandable useable visualisations. We conducted systematic literature review understand current state developing visualisations following design best practices accounting for heterogeneity between end-users contexts. find that, despite being widely recommended, tailoring users through process user-centred remains relatively unexplored topic within risk. To address this, we present unifying framework visualisation, based on existing visualisation frameworks. The contains three phases: Define phase, which aims define characterise context end-user group who will benefit from visualisation; Design highly iterative presents an opportunity test how interpret different elements; Refine focuses evaluating understand, respond to, make decisions visualisation. sufficiently flexible be applied any identify challenges effective useable.

There is substantial and unexplored potential for scientists to engage with the private sector a sustainable ocean. The importance of such cooperation frequent emphasis international dialogues statements, it embedded within Sustainable Development Goals, has been championed by prominent business leaders scientists. But an uncritical embrace science-industry collaboration unhelpful, candid reflections on benefits pitfalls that marine can expect from actively engaging are rare. In this Perspective, we draw our collective experiences working ocean industries in different parts world reflect how influenced work, effects these collaborations have generated, barriers overcome partnerships become more common. doing so, hope help empower new generation explore industry as way develop scale up solutions sustainability.
