Marine and freshwater spawning environments present fish sperm with unique challenges, but for both, gametes often signal prior to contact via biochemical interactions through maternally-derived compounds (i.e. eggs ovarian fluid; OF). For example, when OF is incorporated into the fertilization environment, have been observed exhibit changes in swimming trajectories (e.g. motility velocity), yet it remains unclear whether presence of this consistently improves performance. The current climate change situation could bring critical effects for marine species, especially those already considered endangered. Although some species can adapt fast to the environmental changes, it is necessary get into worst scenario and develop tools anticipatedly assess physiological of such change. With this purpose, our study aims determine effect a range seawater temperatures pHs on sperm motility in European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Low pH (6.5-7.4) decreased comparison control (pH = 8.2). The widespread use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a cryoprotector for fish spermatozoa, including relict sturgeons, well solvent lipophilic antioxidants introduced into basic DMSO-containing cryoprotective media, increases the risk cryodamage to reproductive cells these species, which have low cryoresistance. work investigated effect different concentrations this (10, 11, 16, 21, 27 and 32%) in medium (3 mmol/l KCl, 111 NaCl, 2 CaCl2, 24 NaHCO3 200 glucose) on parameters beluga sperm motility (percentage motile cell movement time) before after cryopreservation. With an increase concentration DMSO, significant decrease percentage spermatozoa was found equilibration stage 15 min, confirms toxicity sturgeon spermatozoa. Beluga sperm, defrosted freezing low-temperature (–196 °C) storage 3 days, demonstrates only 10.5–2.8% cryopreservation, with exception DMSO 32%, at is already 87.5% freezing. Non-monotonic dependencies duration cryopreservation were established, indicates importance optimizing protocols preserving male sturgeons using media.

Nanoparticles (NP) are potentially reprotoxic, which may compromise the success of populations. However, reprotoxicity NP is still scarcely addressed in marine fish. Therefore, we evaluated impacts environmentally relevant and supra environmental concentrations titanium dioxide (TiO2: 10 to 10,000 μg·L-1) silver (Ag: 0.25 250 on sperm gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). We performed short-term direct exposures (ex vivo) motility, head morphometry, mitochondrial function, antioxidant responses DNA integrity. No alteration motility (except for Ag concentration), integrity occurred. depletion all antioxidants occurred after exposure TiO2 NP, whereas SOD decreased (lowest intermediate concentration). Considering our results, decrease did not indicate vulnerability towards oxidative stress. induced low spermiotoxicity, without proven ecological impacts.

Abstract Background Substantial variation in male fertility is regularly observed farmed Arctic charr. However, detailed investigations of its fluctuation during a reproductive season and across years are lacking. Furthermore, information about the effect underlying genetic factors influencing sperm quality scarce. The current study focused on seasonal age-related that may affect characteristics males reared natural delayed photoperiods. Animals were sampled three times for two consecutive years, parameters recorded using computer-assisted analysis (CASA) system. Thereafter, high-throughput sequencing technologies applied, aiming to identify genomic regions related throughout season. Results An across-season was evident. Overall, 29% 42% from spawning groups had highly variable total progressive motility. Males at four age showed significantly higher motility velocities early October November recordings compared following year when same animals five age. On other hand, opposite regarding concentration last sampling.
