Abstract The full potential of managing microbial communities to support plant health is yet-unrealized, in part because it remains difficult ascertain which members are most important for the plant. However, microbes that consistently associate with a species across varied field conditions and over development likely engage host or environment. Here, we applied abundance-occupancy concepts from macroecology quantify core membership bacterial/archaeal fungal rhizosphere common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Our study investigated microbiome persisted multiple dimensions agriculture, including major U.S. growing regions (Michigan, Nebraska, Colorado, Washington), development, annual plantings, divergent genotypes, also included re-analysis public data beans grown Colombia. We found 48 bacterial taxa were detected all samples, inclusive datasets dimensions. This suggests reliable enrichment these environment time-independence their association More generally, breadth ecologically this work (space, time, genotype, management) provides an example how systematically identify stably-associated members, can be other hosts systems.

Abstract Unraveling the drivers controlling community assembly is a central issue in ecology. Although it generally accepted that selection, dispersal, diversification and drift are major processes, defining their relative importance very challenging. Here, we present framework to quantitatively infer mechanisms by phylogenetic bin-based null model analysis (iCAMP). iCAMP shows high accuracy (0.93–0.99), precision (0.80–0.94), sensitivity (0.82–0.94), specificity (0.95–0.98) on simulated communities, which 10–160% higher than those from entire community-based approach. Application of grassland microbial communities response experimental warming reveals dominant roles homogeneous selection (38%) ‘drift’ (59%). Interestingly, decreases over time, enhances primarily imposed Bacillales. In addition, has correlations with drought plant productivity under control. provides an effective robust tool quantify should also be useful for animal

Abstract Microbial communities play important roles in all ecosystems and yet a comprehensive understanding of the ecological processes governing assembly these is missing. To address role biotic interactions between microorganisms for functioning soil microbiota, we used top-down manipulation approach based on removal various populations natural microbial community. We hypothesized that certain groups will strongly affect relative fitness many others, therefore unraveling contribution shaping microbiome. Here show 39% dominant bacterial taxa across treatments were subjected to competitive during recolonization, highlighting importance soil. Moreover, our allowed identification community rule as exemplified by exclusion members Bacillales Proteobacteriales. Modified resulted greater changes activities related N- than C-cycling. Our can provide new promising avenue study complex well links composition ecosystem function.

Abstract Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) input is known to alter plant and microbial α‐diversity, but how N enrichment influences β‐diversity of communities remains poorly understood. Using a long‐term multilevel addition experiment in temperate steppe, we show that plant, soil bacterial fungal exhibited different responses their input. Plant decreased linearly as increased, result increased directional environmental filtering, where properties largely explained variation β‐diversity. Soil first then with increasing input, which was best by corresponding changes heterogeneity. β‐diversity, however, remained unchanged across the gradient, properties, heterogeneity together explaining an insignificant fraction reflecting importance stochastic community assembly. Our study demonstrates divergent effect on assembly communities, emphasizing need examine closely associated fundamental components (i.e., plants microorganisms) ecosystems gain more complete understanding ecological consequences anthropogenic enrichment.

Advances in null-model approaches have resulted a deeper understanding of community assembly mechanisms for variety complex microbiomes. One under-explored application is communities from the built-environment, especially during process disturbances. Anaerobic digestion biological wastewater treatment often underpinned by retaining millions active granular biofilm aggregates. Flotation granules major problem, resulting failure. aggregates were sampled three identical bioreactors treating dairy wastewater. Microbiome structure was analysed using qPCR and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing DNA cDNA. A comprehensive approach quantified floating settled communities. Significant differences diversity observed between granules, particular, we highlight changing abundances Methanosaeta Lactococcus . Both stochastic deterministic processes important assembly. Homogeneous selection primary mechanism all categories, but dispersal also contributed. The lottery model used to identify clade-level competition driving Lottery “winners” identified with different winners groups. Some groups changed their winner status when flotation occurred. Spirochaetaceae , example, only biomass (cDNA-level) lost its flotation. Alternatively, Arcobacter butzerli gained This analysis provides changes that occur instabilities which may be washed out—an consideration control.
