In primates, high-acuity vision is mediated by the fovea, a small specialized central region of retina. The unique to anthropoid lineage among mammals, undergoes notable neuronal morphological changes during postnatal maturation. However, extent cellular similarity across foveas and molecular underpinnings foveal maturation remain unclear. Here, we used high-throughput single-cell RNA sequencing profile retinal cells common marmoset (

Retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) transmit visual information from the eye to brain. In mice, several RGC subtypes show nonuniform spatial distributions, potentially mediating specific functions. However, full extent of specialization remains unknown. Here, we used en-face cryosectioning, transcriptomics, and machine learning map distribution all identified in previous single-cell studies. While two-thirds were evenly distributed, others showed strong biases toward ventral or dorso-temporal regions associated with sky vision area retinae temporalis (ART), predicted homolog centralis. Additionally, observed unexpected variation gene expression within along dorso-ventral axis vs. outside ART, independent density profiles. Finally, found limited correlations between profiles ART primate macula, suggesting divergent mouse central vision.

Abstract We recently investigated whether activity in primary visual cortex of a primate (Callithrix jacchus) is modulated during running, and found that the effects were small (and suppressive), notable difference from large positive modulations observed mice. In first report, we noted majority our data collected retinotopic representation fovea, surmised running might be different peripheral representation. Here, report running-correlated marmoset V1 are substantial— on order 30%. light both negative foveal V1, seen mouse these results suggest primates may unique. this domain, non-foveal appears more similar to rodents.

Abstract The retina, whose basic cellular structure is highly conserved across vertebrates, constitutes an accessible system for studying the central nervous system. In recent years, single-cell RNA-sequencing studies have uncovered diversity in retina of a variety species, providing new insights on retinal evolution and development. However, similar data cartilaginous fishes, sister group to all other extant jawed are still lacking. Here, we present single-nucleus atlas postnatal catshark Scyliorhinus canicula , consisting expression profiles 17,438 individual cells from three female, juvenile specimens. Unsupervised clustering revealed 22 distinct cell types comprising major classes, as well progenitor (whose presence reflects persistence proliferative activity stages sharks) oligodendrocytes. Thus, our dataset serves foundation further development function retina. Moreover, integration with species will allow better understanding vertebrate evolution.

The transcription factor forkhead/winged-helix domain proteins Foxp1 and Foxp2 have previously been studied in mouse retina, where they are expressed retinal ganglion cells named F-mini F-midi. Here we show that both factors by small subpopulations (on average less than 10%) of the retina marmoset monkey (Callithrix jacchus). morphology Foxp1- Foxp2-expressing was revealed intracellular DiI injections immunofluorescent cells. comprised multiple types wide-field cells, including broad thorny narrow tufted large majority were identified as Tufted stratify broadly middle inner plexiform layer. They resemble but their proximal dendrites bare branches distal branch frequently forming dense dendritic tufts. Double labeling with calretinin, a established marker for showed only proportion co-expressed calretinin or supporting idea two markers differentially retina.
