Various retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) show regional adaptations, for instance, to increase visual acuity. However, many RGC types, it is not known how they vary in their signalprocessing properties across the retina. In mouse retina, sustained ON alpha (sONα) RGCs were found have differences morphology and receptive field sizes along nasotemporal axis, temporal sONα are likely play a role visually guided hunting. Thus, we hypothesised that this cell type also exhibits adaptations on level of dendritic signal processing these advantageous prey capture. Here, measured signals from individual at different locations exvivo whole-mount retina using two-photon microscopy. We both postsynaptic Ca 2+ dendrites presynaptic glutamate bipolar (BCs). exhibit, addition expected sustained-ON with only weak surrounds, strong surround suppression, which present nasal RGCs. This difference was excitatory inputs BCs, suggesting origin. Finally, population models an encoder-decoder paradigm, showed might be beneficial detecting crickets hunting behaviour.

Abstract Orientation or axial selectivity, the property of neurons in visual system to respond preferentially certain angles stimuli, plays a pivotal role our understanding perception and information processing. This computation is performed as early retina, although much work has established cellular mechanisms retinal orientation how this organized across retina unknown. Using large dataset collected mouse we demonstrate functional organization rules selectivity. First, identify three major classes cells that are selective match previous descriptions. Second, show one predominantly represented predominant changes function location. Third, neural activity little on Lastly, use silico modeling followed by validation experiments overrepresented aligns along concentric axes. These results that, similar direction selectivity map retina.

Across the animal kingdom, visual predation relies on motion-sensing neurons in superior colliculus (SC) and its orthologs. These exhibit complex stimulus preferences, including direction selectivity, which is thought to be critical for tracking unpredictable escape routes of prey. The source selectivity SC contested, contributions have not been tested experimentally. Here, we use type-specific cell removal show that narrow-field (NF) mouse guide predation. In vivo recordings demonstrate direction-selective responses NF cells are independent recently reported stimulus-edge effects. Monosynaptic retrograde tracing reveals receive synaptic input from ganglion cells. When eliminate retina adult mice, SC, cells, lost. However, eliminating retinal does affect hunting success or strategies even when removed after mice learned hunt, despite abolishing gaze-stabilizing optokinetic reflex. Thus, our results identify SC. They predation, an essential spatial orienting task, their revealing behavioral multiplexing neural feature preferences highlighting importance feature-selective manipulations neuroethology.
