Climate change and California’s terrestrial biodiversity

In
this
review
and
synthesis,
we
argue
that
California
is
an
important
test
case
for
the
nation
world
because
terrestrial
biodiversity
very
high,
present
anticipated
threats
to
from
climate
change
other
interacting
stressors
are
severe,
innovative
approaches
protecting
in
context
of
being
developed
tested.
We
first
salient
dimensions
California's
physical,
biological,
human
diversity.
Next,
examine
four
facets
threat
their
sustainability
these
posed
by
change:
direct
impacts,
illustrated
a
new
analysis
shifting
diversity
hotspots
plants;
interactive
effects
involving
invasive
species,
land-use
change,
stressors;
impacts

regimes;

Climate
change

phenological
studies

useful
tool
to
track
biological
response

herbarium-preserved
specimens.

12,000
herbarium
specimens
29
dominant
native
plant
species
that
characteristic
12
broadly
distributed
vegetation
types
investigate
patterns
in
change.

trends

phenophases:
preflowering
(FBF),
flowering
(F),
fruiting
(FS)
and
growth
(DVG),
over
time
(from
1830
2023)
changes
variables
1896
2023).

examined
within
California’s
10
ecoregions.
Among
phenophases,
strongest
was
found
timing
flowering,
which
showed
an
advance
28
species.
Furthermore,
21
sequencing
two
or
phenophases.

Diverse
less-consistent
results
were
for
water-related
with

advancing

delaying
various
phenophases
decreasing
precipitation

ones.
This
study
underscores
role
driving
change,
demonstrating
how
rising
temperatures
have
predominantly
advanced
phenophase
timing.

in
2012,
China
has
promoted
significant
advancements
technologies

energy
conservation,
emission
reduction

clean

accelerated
examination
mechanisms,

incentives,

However,
despite
notable
growth
number
patents,
China's
still
faces
numerous
challenges,
