Background: The Growth and Empowerment Measure was developed by for Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander adults to measure social emotional well-being empowerment. This study aimed co-design validate a version of the with young people experiencing youth detention. Method: 103 detention participated. Participants directed seven adaptations from create Measure-Youth (GEM-Youth). 78 participants completed GEM-Youth 7 57 both full Kessler psychological distress scale (K10). Cronbach’s alpha inter-item correlations were calculated two components GEM-Youth: how I feel about myself thinking my everyday life. Associations between K10 scores quantified using Pearson’s correlation. Results: How questions had mean correlation (0.21) good internal consistency (α = 0.80). Thinking life 0.18 α 0.69. showed strong negative ( r (55) –0.61, [95% confidence interval: –0.42, –0.75] p < 0.001) K10. moderate (–0.31, −0.05, −0.52] 0.02). Implications: provides culturally grounded validated assess empowerment in settings. has therapeutic research value that should be further refined explored. Future adapt this tool use other groups
