‘What do you love about sport?’ Exploring boys’ and girls’ embodied experiences of sport

There
is
a
wealth
of
research
documenting
boys'
and
girls'
gendered
identities
in
through
sport,
much
which
provides
critical
account
masculinist
discourses,
particularly
related
to
team
sports.
Furthermore,
while
there
are
many
accounts
children's
enjoyment
definitions
fun
wide-ranging,
little
has
been
written
on
positive
orientations
towards
sport
from
corporeal
perspective.
Using
the
starting
question,
'what
do
you
love
about
how
does
it
make
feel?',
this
explores
boys
girls
speak
their
embodied
experiences
sport.
Twenty-one
focus
groups
took
place
with
(n
=
147)
seven
primary
schools
Republic
Ireland.
Before
analysis,
data
were
separated
into
responses.
Reflexive
thematic
analysis
resulted
construction
patterns
around
Boys
described
predominantly
terms
physical
encounters
such
as
collisions
skill
improvement.
Girls
displayed
wider
array
feelings
sensations
describing
calming,
prioritising
social
interactions,
also
important.
While
results
conform
normative
some
examples
both
subverting
these
subjectivities,
middle
childhood
accessing
range
than
previously
imagined.
Given
importance
attached
sporting
experiences,
implications
for
continued
participation
considered,
provision
meaningful

This
paper
explores
how
children
experience
parental
influence
on
their
leisure
time,
or
the
time
that
they
spend
outside
of
schooling,
including
both
organised
and
casual
activities.
Twenty-one
focus
groups
were
conducted
with
(n
=
147)
aged
10–12,
derived
from
seven
primary
schools
in
Ireland.
Children
discussed
hobbies,
free
pursuits,
sporting
activities
digital
media
use,
elaborated
parents'
interventions
this
regard.
Utilising
a
childhood
studies
approach
within
Bourdieusian
framework,
findings
indicate
salience
Irish
culture
particular
gender
as
differentiating
factors
terms
children's
choices.
The
frequency
type
activity,
cultivation
Gaelic
games
gendered
roles
mothers
fathers
key
features
practices.
Casual
such
outdoor
play
hanging
around
involved
less
influence,
apart
which
was
heavily
mediated
by
parents,
mothers.
Through
social
reproduction,
research
demonstrates
significance
practices
for
themselves,
parents
turn,
wider
society.
