Abstract Background An estimated 140 million people in Africa face acute malnutrition. By impacting agricultural production, climate change is likely to further decrease food consumption, particularly sub-Saharan African states. Against this backdrop, various actors have called for more attention alternative farming and systems based on traditional knowledge capable of ensuring access sufficient, nutritious, safe food. So far, however, we limited systematic evidence which practices may promote the resilience households exposed extreme climatic conditions. Focusing most prevalent diversification Tanzania, study assesses extent crop diversification, annual intercropping, crop-tree crop-livestock integration, cultivation crops increase availability dietary diversity smallholders facing weather events Tanzania. Methods We combine temperature rain data with information consumption provided by Living Standards Measurement Study–Integrated Surveys Agriculture than 25,000 Tanzanian nationwide. rely a matched differences-in-differences approach account selection bias allow causal inference. Results Our matching models consistently show that planting (in particular sorghum) promotes reduces need rationing experiencing shocks. In contrast, relying maize less increased behavior. addition, find that—under conditions—crop furthers households’ diversity, as well seem reduce ration Conclusion policy recommendation This has important implications policymakers. light variability, it underscores better integrate indigenous into systems. results call greater dissemination strategies reliance indigenous, drought-tolerant crops. Drought, pests, soil fertility depletion, environmental challenges, and the limited use of agricultural inputs continue to plague food production in many developing countries such as Mozambique. As a response these constraints, sustainable strategies must be defined cope with problems. One strategy, largely applied worldwide, is combination usage plant growth-promoting microorganisms, conservation tillage, intercropping, crop residue management. The above can help smallholder farmers become more resilient, sustainable, productive, framework where limitations imposed by global climate change are being exacerbated. impacts less known lack studies Here, we provide comprehensive review based on relevant scientific literature published last three decades which evaluated effects diverse alternatives for production, mainly oriented enhance tolerance drought. their promising potential increase yields under drought conditions emerge one most approaches, leading both an productivity amelioration properties Southern However, achieve this goal, it critical perform that enable positive also take full account specific socio-economic contexts developed semi-arid areas Hence, future field assessing agriculture practices yield environment suggested address issues concerned productions allow us Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) SDG 2.

Climate change poses significant challenges to global agriculture, with rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events threatening crop yields. These changes exceed the adaptability thresholds many crops, decreasing their yield food security. At plant physiological levels, climate change-induced stressors disrupt photosynthesis, growth, reproductive processes, contributing a reduced productivity. Furthermore, negative impacts on agriculture are exacerbated by anthropogenic factors, itself significantly greenhouse gas emissions. To mitigate these challenges, various approaches have been explored. This work reviews most important physical, chemical, biological strategies commonly used in broad range agricultural crops. Among physical strategies, increasing water use efficiency without reduction through different irrigation foliar treatments reflective properties effects stresses proven be effective. Concerning chemical approaches, exogenous treatment plants chemicals induces existing molecular defense mechanisms, enhancing abiotic stress tolerance. Regarding treatments, inoculation mycorrhiza growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can improve enzymatic antioxidant capacity mineral solubilization, favoring root growth enhance performance under stressful conditions. While provide valuable short- medium-term solutions, there is pressing need for new biotechnological aimed at developing genotypes resistant Collaborative efforts among researchers, policymakers, stakeholders essential ensure security face ongoing challenges.

The genetic diversity of cultivars climate factors can affect fatty acid composition yield traits. This study aimed assess the effects genotype conditions on productive performance eight oleic safflower genotypes under rainfed Sicily (Italy). These were compared Montola 2000 cultivar, which was used as reference. Tests carried out during growing seasons 2014-2015 2015-2016. experimental design randomized complete block with three replications. Morphological components significantly affected by while year had significant effect plant height only. In general, CTI 17 produced highest (1.40 t ha-1) (0.58 ha-1). content found 40.2% dry matter, average. "genotype" factor composition.
