Integrative review on psychological and social risk and prevention factors of eating disorders including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: seven major theories

Across
the
globe,
disordered
eating
disorders
alarmingly
have
increased
by
over
30%
in
general
public,
as
characterised
a
wide
range
of
eating,
shape
and
weight
concerns.
Subsequent
physical,
functional,
social,
mental
health
issues
significantly
burden
society,
conveying
various
personal
sufferings
to
affected
individuals.
Disordered
behaviours
cognitions
can
increase
clinical
severity,
such
anorexia
nervosa
bulimia
nervosa.
The
present
study
critically
reviewed
100
major
papers
on
integrate
theoretical
underpinnings
explore
practical
insights.

identifying
seven
theories
concerning
development
persistence
disturbed
behaviour.

include
self-esteem
theory,
interpersonal
emotion
regulation
executive
function
social
neuroscience
theory
mind,
trans-diagnostic
theory.

suggested

research
gaps
inconsistencies,
including
directional
ambiguity
between
body
dissatisfaction,

Prospective
empirical
studies
should
incorporate

complexities

multiple
mediation

Background:
Existing
evidence
showed
that
social
anxiety
represents
a
significant
factor
in
eating
disorders.
However,
to
our
knowledge,
no
prior
study
has
examined
the
association
between

behaviors.
Objectives:

present
aimed
at
exploring
relationship
behaviors,
investigating
resilience
as
moderator
of
this
relationship.

adolescents

adults

15–24
years

Abstract
Objective
Eating
disorders
(EDs)
represent
a
rising
global
health
concern.
The
current
study
takes
multivariate
approach
to
examine
psychological
(i.e.,
perfectionism,
anxiety
sensitivity
[AS],
emotion
dysregulation)
and
sociocultural
factors
body
dissatisfaction)
that
may
relate
risk
resilience
in
EDs.
Methods
Participants
were
698
undergraduate
students
(

female
