Being infected by COVID-19 represents a major psychological stressor, with the virus itself exerting direct biological effects that may contribute to cognitive and mental health challenges. In retrospective study conducted in Brazil, Bonfim et al reported 24% of 630 outpatients, confirmed positive between December 2020 March 2022, exhibited symptoms. These symptoms ranged from difficulties attention memory impaired thinking. Depression, fatigue, female gender were identified as risk factors for these Similarly, Li surveying 482 patients China 2022 June 2023, found 13% experienced depression, 27% anxiety, 25% stress. COVID-19 is associated with a range of neurological, cognitive, and mental health symptoms both acutely chronically that can persist for many months after infection in people long-COVID syndrome. Investigations cognitive function neuroimaging have begun to elucidate the nature some these symptoms. They reveal that, although deficits may be related brain imaging abnormalities people, also occur absence objective or changes. Furthermore, impairment detected even asymptomatic individuals. We consider evidence regarding symptoms, deficits, neuroimaging, as well their possible underlying mechanisms.

Abstract Components that comprise our brain parenchymal and cerebrovascular structures provide a homeostatic environment for proper neuronal function to ensure normal cognition. Cerebral insults (e.g. ischaemia, microbleeds infection) alter cellular physiologic processes within the neurovascular unit contribute cognitive dysfunction. COVID-19 has posed significant complications during acute convalescent stages in multiple organ systems, including brain. Cognitive impairment is prevalent complication patients, irrespective of severity SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moreover, overwhelming evidence from vitro, preclinical clinical studies reported SARS-CoV-2-induced pathologies components are associated with impairment. ABSTRACT COVID‐19 exhibits not only respiratory symptoms but also neurological/psychiatric rarely including delirium/psychosis. Pathological studies on provide evidence that the cytokine storm, in particular (epidermal growth factor) EGF receptor (EGFR, ErbB1, Her1) activation, plays a central role progression of viral replication and lung fibrosis. Of note, SARS‐CoV‐2 virus (specifically, S1 spike domain) mimics directly transactivates EGFR, preceding inflammatory process. In agreement, anticancer drugs targeting EGFR such as Nimotuzumab tyrosine kinase inhibitors are markedly effective COVID‐19. Long COVID is a debilitating chronic condition that has affected over 100 million people globally. The association between COVID-19 and subsequent neurological psychiatric disorders is well established. However, two important questions remain unanswered. First, what are the risks in those admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) with COVID-19? Admission ICU itself associated sequelae it not clear whether further increases or changes their profile. Second, trajectories of patients hospital COVID-19, when do subside? We sought answer these using a retrospective cohort study based on electronic health records (EHR) data from TriNetX Analytics Network (covering 89 million patients, mostly USA).
