Amid the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19), scientific community has a responsibility to provide accessible public health resources within their communities. Wastewater based epidemiology (WBE) been used monitor spread of pandemic. The goal this review was evaluate need for an environmental justice approach COVID-19 WBE starting with state California in United States. Methods included peer-reviewed literature, government-provided data, and news stories. As June 2021, there were twelve universities, nine dashboards, 48 384 wastewater treatment plants monitoring SARS-CoV-2 California. majority conducted urban areas Coastal Southern (34/48), lack more rural Central (10/48) Northern (4/48). Similar access clinical testing vaccinations, is disparity which can often early warning system outbreaks. This research demonstrates equity considerations when determining locations monitoring.

Since the start of 2019 pandemic, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has proven to be a valuable tool for monitoring prevalence SARS-CoV-2. With methods and infrastructure being settled, it is time expand potential this wider range pathogens. We used over 500 archived RNA extracts from WBE program SARS-CoV-2 surveillance monitor wastewater 11 treatment plants presence influenza norovirus twice week during winter season 2021/2022. Extracts were analyzed via digital PCR A, B, GI, GII. Resulting viral loads normalized on basis NH4-N. Our results show good applicability ammonia-normalization compare different plants. originally prepared contained sufficient genomic material Viral A GII in correlated with numbers infected inpatients. Further, related non-pharmaceutical interventions affected subsequent changes both In conclusion, expansion existing programs include additional pathogens besides offers cost-efficient possibility gain public health information.

Environmental surveillance (ES) of a pathogen is crucial for understanding the community load disease. As an early warning system, ES SARS-CoV-2 has complemented routine diagnostic by capturing near real-time virus circulation at population level. In this longitudinal study conducted between January 2022 and June in 28 sewershed sites Bengaluru city (∼11 million inhabitants), we quantified weekly RNA concentrations to track infection dynamics provide evidence change relative abundance emerging variants. We describe system using exponentially weighted moving average control chart demonstrate how wastewater correlated with clinically diagnosed new COVID-19 cases, trends appearing 8-14 days earlier than clinical data. This was further corroborated showing that estimated number infections strongly copies detected wastewater. Using deconvolution matrix, variants concern up two months samples. In addition, found huge diversity compared The findings from have been discussed regularly local authorities inform policy-making decisions. Our highlights quantifying viral titre, correlating it known cases area, combined genomic helps tracking (VOC) over time space, enabling timely making informed policy decisions. This work supported funding Rockefeller Foundation grant National Centre Biological Sciences, TIFR) Indian Council Medical Research (FI) Tata Institute Genetics Society Trusts.
