Childhood maltreatment has been linked to adult somatic symptoms, though this rarely examined in daily life. Furthermore, the localization of somatization associated with childhood and its subtypes is unknown. This large-scale experience sampling study uses body maps examine relationships between maltreatment, subtypes, intensity location negative sensations Participants (N=2,234; 33% female, 67% male) were part MyBPLab 2.0, a large conducted using bespoke mobile phone application. Four categories (emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect) measured Trauma Questionnaire. Using gender-matched human silhouettes, participants indicated feelings activation body. generally four all positively heightened on both front back maps. For females, total was abdomen lower back, while for males, association localized back. Similarly, each subscales had associations except which also males. These likely reflect increased individuals exposed suggesting role psychotherapeutic interventions alleviating distress.

Background: Somatic symptoms, such as chronic pain, fatigue, and gastrointestinal disturbances, are commonly reported in individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment (CM), which includes various forms abuse neglect experienced before age 18. Although CM is strongly associated somatic the specific relationships between subtypes these well mechanisms connecting them, remain insufficiently understood. This review examines complex interaction often coexist mental disorders significantly impact quality life healthcare systems. Summary: frequently mix "explained" "unexplained" conditions, personal distress pose diagnostic challenges. has been linked to symptoms through neurobiological mechanisms, HPA axis dysregulation allostatic load, while theoretical models emphasize roles hyperawareness, cultural factors, vulnerability symptom development. However, existing research fails account for subtypes, full range situational leading inconsistencies findings. Key Messages: Bridging gaps literature requires adopting World Health Organization’s subtype definitions ICD-11 codes (MA00-MH2Y) encompass broader spectrum symptoms. Employing rigorous methodologies, systematic reviews meta-analyses, essential advancing understanding. These approaches can enhance accuracy, support tailored interventions, promote biopsychosocial framework research, ultimately improving patient outcomes alleviating societal burdens.

Abstract Childhood maltreatment (CM) is experienced by ∼40% of all children at major personal and societal costs. The divergent associations between emotional, physical, sexual abuse or neglect in childhood differences adult emotional functioning regulation were examined terms daily emotion intensity, variability, instability, inertia, diversity, reported over 30 days 290 Dutch aged 19-73. Participants described their abuse/neglect experiences retrospectively using the Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Dissecting CM effects on dynamics may inform theories ontogenesis emotions, neglect, to better understand (dys)functional development, prevent adverse sequelae. Structural equation models (SEM) showed that most types associated with specific patterns dynamics, only had no unique dynamic indices. Emotional was measures (i.e., less intense, variable, unstable, diverse emotions). Sexual increases physical decreases negative affect variability instability. Physical inertia but a small effect size. Social contact frequency did not mediate much relationship dynamics.

BACKGROUND Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in children present with chronic symptoms like abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation without identifiable structural abnormalities. These are closely linked to gut-brain axis dysfunction, altered gut microbiota, psychosocial stress, leading psychiatric comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, behavioral issues. Understanding this bidirectional relationship is crucial for developing effective, holistic management strategies that address physical mental health. AIM To examine the impacts of FGIDs children, focusing on anxiety depression their association other neurodevelopmental childhood, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, emphasizing role axis, emotional dysregulation, stress. Key mechanisms explored include neurotransmitter microbiota imbalance, central sensitization, heightening stress reactivity, symptom perception. The review also evaluates family dynamics coping exacerbating FGID contributing conditions. METHODS A narrative was conducted using 328 studies sourced from PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, covering research published over past 20 years. Inclusion criteria focused examining diagnosis, mechanisms, comorbidities, factors pediatric populations. commonly affecting including functional constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux, cyclic vomiting were analyzed concerning psychological impacts. RESULTS highlights a strong connection between symptoms, mediated by dysregulated sensitization. physiological disruptions increase children’s vulnerability while - early-life trauma, maladaptive dynamics, ineffective intensify cycle distress. CONCLUSION Effective requires biopsychosocial approach integrating medical, psychological, dietary interventions. Parental education, early intervention, multidisciplinary care coordination critical mitigating long-term improving both health outcomes FGIDs.
