Human society and natural environment form a complex giant ecosystem, where human activities not only lead to the change in environmental states, but also react them. By using collective-risk social dilemma game, some studies have already revealed that individual contributions risk of future losses are inextricably linked. These works, however, often use an idealistic assumption is constant affected by behaviors. Here, we develop coevolutionary game approach captures coupled dynamics cooperation risk. In particular, level population affects state risk, while turn influences individuals' behavioral decision-making. Importantly, explore two representative feedback forms describing possible effect strategy on namely, linear exponential feedbacks. We find can be maintained keeping at certain fraction or forming evolutionary oscillation with independently type. However, such outcome depends initial state. Taken together, two-way coupling between collective actions essential avoid tragedy commons. More importantly, critical starting portion cooperators what really need for guiding evolution toward desired direction.

Global warming, habitat loss and overexploitation of limited resources are leading to alarming biodiversity declines. Ecosystems complex adaptive systems that display multiple alternative states can shift from one another in abrupt ways. Some these tipping points have been identified predicted by mathematical computational models. Moreover, scales involved potential mitigation or intervention scenarios tied particular levels complexity, cells human–environment coupled systems. In dealing with a biosphere where humans part complex, endangered ecological network, novel theoretical engineering approaches need be considered. At the centre most research efforts is biodiversity, which essential maintain community resilience ecosystem services. What done mitigate, counterbalance prevent points? Future climate change can cause more days with poor air quality. This could trigger alerts telling people to stay inside protect themselves, potential consequences for health and equity. Here, we study the in US quality over this century due fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), who they may affect, how respond. They predominantly affect areas high Black populations leakier homes, exacerbating existing inequalities impacting those less able adapt. Reducing emissions offer significant annual benefits ($5,400 person) mitigating effect of pollution its associated risks early death. Relying adapt, instead, would require them inside, doors windows closed, an extra 142 d year, at average cost $11,000 person. It appears likelier, however, that will achieve minimal protection without policy adaptation rates. Boosting net benefits, even alongside deep emission cuts. New policies could, example: reduce costs; infiltration improve indoor quality; awareness adaptation; provide measures working or living outdoors. emissions, conversely, lowers everyone’s need protects cannot Equitably protecting human from under requires both mitigation adaptation.

Human and environmental systems should not be viewed in isolation from each other but as a complex integrated system since humans only influence ecosystem services functions also respond to changes the ecosystem. Additionally, stochastic perturbations play crucial role natural systems, factors associated with social ecological can significantly affect dynamics of coupled models, such noise-induced tipping. In this paper, we propose human-environment model noisy disturbances that includes forest conservation opinions within population expansion harvesting ecosystems. We investigate how stochasticity triggers critical transitions between high low cover states (or stable oscillatory state) using fitting parameters old-growth forests Oregon. Based on landscape-flow theory non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, quantify global stability robustness equilibria limit cycles barrier height average flux. find state weakens, becomes increasingly noise intensity increases. Social institutions are systems of shared norms and rules that regulate people’s behaviors, often emerging without external enforcement. They provide criteria to distinguish cooperation from defection establish sustain cooperation, shaped through long-term trial error. While principles for successful have been proposed, the mechanisms underlying their emergence remain poorly understood. To address this, we introduce evolutionary dynamical-systems game theory couples actions with environmental dynamics explores evolution cognitive frameworks decision-making.
