Reviewing the Impact of the Opioid Overdose Epidemic on the Mental Wellbeing of First Responders DOI

The opioid overdose epidemic is a growing concern for first responders on the front lines. Yet, limited knowledge exists regarding psychological impacts from repeated exposure to events. Using scoping review approach, authors searched scholarly databases combination of related keywords including responders, mental health, and epidemic. Twenty-three (23) peer reviewed articles met criteria inclusion. Six (6) additional non-refereed reports were also included. Frequently cited concerns included increased/unmanageable workloads, burnout, compassion fatigue, safety, negative attitudes/cynicism, cumulative/repeated exposures, frustration with lack resources. Several resources described proactive measures mitigate consequences. One such measure Behavioral Health Access Program (BHAP), comprehensive, specialized program designed address health needs responders. Due to the job characteristics, firefighters are repeatedly exposed trauma incidents. However, not all exhibit same level of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or growth (PTG). Despite this, few studies have looked into firefighters' PTSD and PTG.

Purpose Firefighters are daily confronted with adverse, unpredictable and demanding situations. It is a dangerous profession that puts firefighters at risk of developing burnout. Although the literature has already identified personal work-related factors burnout, examination specific explaining burnout among volunteer career still needed. The purpose this study to investigate role on firefighters’ Design/methodology/approach A nonrandom convenience sample 250 (67% volunteer; M age = 31.88) completed sociodemographic questionnaire, Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, Proactive Coping Scale standard living subscale item. Hierarchical multiple linear regression models were tested. Fisher’s criterion was considered, p -values lower than 0.05 interpreted as statistically significant. INTRODUCTION: Firefighters, as the first responders to disasters, are exposed dangerous and stressful situ­ations experience high job stress due nature of their work, affecting various physical mental health dimensions. The aim this study was assess in Iranian firefighters by systematic review. MATERIAL AND METHODS: PRISMA guideline used conduct present study. Data resources SID, Magiran, Scopus, PubMed, ISC, Web Science, Google Scholar were searched. Conference papers reference list retrieved articles screened identify additional studies. Literature searches conducted both Persian English without any time limit until end 2020. RESULTS: Initially, 147 studies identified, finally 13 eligible systematically reviewed. In study, 2378 studied. Most had cross-sectional designs. CONCLUSIONS: results showed that most stress, influencing other life aspects such quality life, satisfaction, etc. As appropriate interventions can reduce providing with adequate training at beginning employment also in-service training, it is possible stress.
