Background An anticipated surge in mental health service demand related to COVID-19 has motivated the use of novel methods care meet demand, given workforce limitations. Digital technologies form self-tracking technology have been identified as a potential avenue, provided sufficient evidence exists support their effectiveness contexts. Objective This literature review aims identify current and physiological or physiologically monitoring capabilities Apple Watch relevant examine accuracy validation status these measures implications for treatment. Methods A was conducted from June 2021 July both published gray pertaining Watch, health, physiology. The studies validating sensor Watch. Results total 5583 paper titles were identified, with 115 (2.06%) reviewed full. Of papers, 19 (16.5%) comparison studies. Most showed that could measure heart rate acceptably increased errors case movement. Accurate energy expenditure measurements are difficult most wearables, generally providing best results compared peers, despite overestimation. Heart variability found gaps data but able detect mild stress. Activity step counting good agreement, although wheelchair be prone overestimation poor performance on overground tasks. Atrial fibrillation detection mixed results, part because high inconclusive result rate, may useful ongoing monitoring. No recorded Sleep app feature; however, accelerometer-based sleep sensitivity detecting sleep. Conclusions encouraging regarding application particularly is key indicator changes physical emotional states. Particular benefits derived through avoidance recall bias collection supporting ecological context data. However, lack methodologically robust replicated user benefit, supportive economic analysis, concerns about personal information remain factors must addressed enable broader uptake.

The term "digital phenotype" refers to the digital footprint left by patient-environment interactions. It has potential for both research and clinical applications but challenges our conception of health care opposing 2 distinct approaches medicine: one centered on illness with aim classifying curing disease, other patients, their personal distress, lived experiences. In context mental psychiatry, benefits phenotyping include creating new avenues treatment enabling patients take control own well-being. However, this comes at cost sacrificing fundamental human element psychotherapy, which is crucial addressing patients' distress. viewpoint paper, we discuss advances rendered possible highlight risk that technology may pose partially excluding professionals from diagnosis therapeutic process, thereby foregoing an essential dimension care. We conclude setting out concrete recommendations how improve current so it can be harnessed redefine empowering without alienating them.

Precision medicine and digital phenotyping are two prominent data-based approaches within medicine. While precision historically used primarily genetic data to find targeted treatment options, relies on the usage of big deriving from devices such as smartphones, wearables other connected devices. This paper first focusses aspect type explore differences similarities between phenotyping. It outlines different ways collection production consequences thereof. Second, it shows how these sorts influence dominant beliefs in field: The field relying understanding ‘genetic determinism’ imported genetics, building logic ‘data fundamentalism’. In end, analysis informs potentials well challenges phenotyping: a better health care for (some) individuals with individualisation responsibilisation all, prognosed shift reactive preventive Additionally, might facilitate epistemological ontological redirections whole that will also affect knowledge reassessment value types (quantifiable vs. non-quantifiable) all its consequences. Institutionally, lead shifts distribution power experts related technologies, i.e. private companies.

Data-Driven and Artificial Intelligence technologies are rapidly changing the way that health research is conducted, including offering new opportunities. This will inevitably have adverse environmental impacts. These include carbon dioxide emissions linked to energy required generate process large amounts of data; impact on material environment (in form data centres); unsustainable extraction minerals for technological components; e-waste (discarded electronic appliances) disposal. The growth means there now a compelling need consider these impacts develop mitigate them. Here, we offer scoping review how storage processing during health-related being discussed in academic literature. Using UK as case study, also policies initiatives UK. Our findings suggest little engagement with issues date. We discuss implications this ways sector needs move become more environmentally sustainable.

Digital phenotyping is a rapidly growing research field promising to transform how psychiatry measures, classifies, predicts, and explains human behavior. This article advances the social-scientific examination of digital phenotyping's epistemology knowledge claims. Drawing on notion “neuromolecular gaze” in since 1960s, it suggests that concerns new psychiatric gaze—the “digital gaze.” Rather than privileging neuromolecular explanations, gaze privileges “deep” physiological, behavioral, social “truths” afforded by technologies big data. The interrogates two concepts directing gaze: phenotype” biomarkers.” Both make explicit an epistemic link between “the digital” biological.” examines soundness construction this to, first, offer “reality check” claims and, second, more clearly delineate demarcate gaze. It argues there evidence significant mis- overstatements about basis biology, including much-hyped biomarker research. driving biologization traces, as some have suggested, mental health so far seems mainly concerned with processes can be surveilled means devices.
